  • Pandemic WHO qualifies omicron variant as 'worrying'

Five days before Christmas Eve, Spain jumps to the last step of the risk of contagion by SARS-CoV-2. It is, officially, "very high", exceeding 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the entrance to the omicron scene has only worsened the situation. In anticipation of the social interaction that may occur during the Christmas holidays, the World Health Organization (WHO) launches a message: the new variant "is spreading significantly faster than the delta" and "the general threat this represents depends on of how populations understand, perceive risk and follow public health control measures.

According to the latest technical report published by this body, "there is consistent evidence that omicron has a

substantial growth

advantage

over delta in countries with

documented

community transmission

, with a doubling time between 1.5 and 3 days." In addition, the text states, "omicron is spreading rapidly in countries with high levels of population immunity." However, it remains uncertain to what extent the observed rapid growth rate can be attributed to immune evasion, intrinsic increased transmissibility, or a combination of both. What does seem clear, based on the data currently available, is that "it is likely that omicron will exceed the delta where community transmission occurs."

Already on November 26, the WHO described this variant as "worrying".

It is a derivative of SARS-CoV-2 "highly divergent with a high number of mutations ... some of which may be associated with a potential for humoral immune escape and increased transmissibility."

As of December 16, ómicron

has already been identified in 89 countries

, including Spain.

The global threat that it represents depends to a large extent on the public health measures that are taken and the governments of the different countries are responsible for this.

On the other hand, the WHO points out that preliminary data point to "

a significant reduction in immunity against the new variant

" among those who have the initial full vaccination schedule (two or one dose, depending on the vaccine received) or who have passed Covid-19 infection.

However, the evidence is still "limited" and "must be interpreted with caution."

Regarding treatment for patients with severe or critical Covid-19 associated with omicron, the WHO report finds preliminary data suggesting that

"some of the monoclonal antibodies developed against SARS-CoV-2 may have decreased neutralization against the new variant".

Faced with the next risk scenario, the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) urges the central and regional health administrations to take "sufficient and effective" measures to control the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, and especially of the variant omicron, given the increase in cases that can lead to "a collapse of health."

Among the measures, pulmonologists

ask for the 'Covid Passport'

to be implemented to access restaurant and leisure spaces.

In addition, they request to speed up vaccination at the national level in the child population and to reevaluate the need for a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in the general population by age groups, giving preference to patients with risk factors for poor evolution.

In addition, they insist on the imperative need to make a determined commitment to vaccination in developing countries.
