The South-West is no longer spared by the new episode of avian flu which is raging in Europe.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced on Friday that a "focus of highly pathogenic avian influenza type H5N1 was confirmed on December 16 in a duck farm" in the Gers.

This is a farm in the town of Manciet, which breeds ducks ready to force-feed.

And especially the first cases detected in the region since the episode of last winter.

In accordance with health recommendations, the Gers home was "depopulated", like two neighboring farms, and disinfected.

The prefect has set up a surveillance zone with a radius of 10 km in which the movement of poultry is now prohibited.

Eight households in total in France

This new wave of avian flu has so far resulted in the detection of eight outbreaks in French farms, including seven in the Nord department.

There are also 11 cases recorded on wildlife, the most recent of which is located in the Aude, in the town of Sigean where birds were found dead.

In Europe, 29 countries are now affected according to the ministry.

As a reminder, the consumption of meat, foie gras and eggs - and more generally of any food product made from poultry - does not present any risk for humans.
