Since 2018, Landerneau (Finistère) has been fighting against cigarette butts.

The town has been awarded the first ear of the “Zero butt city” label.

A plaque symbolizing this distinction was unveiled at the entrance to the city on Tuesday.

The label is granted by MéGO !, a local company transforming cigarette ends into street furniture, says

.

This is the first award obtained in France by a city fighting against cigarette butts in public spaces.

One hundred signs "Here begins the sea, do not throw anything" had first been installed at the level of the outlets.

Pocket ashtrays were also distributed in 2018 and 2019.

Keep fighting

A collection was also organized from bars and restaurants, making it possible to recover 19,500 cigarette butts, or 9.7 kg of waste.

The operation is still underway in 50 establishments.

The city should soon benefit from financial aid of 17,500 euros to continue its action and obtain the two other ears of the label.

"A butt takes fifteen years to deteriorate," said Mayor Patrick Leclerc.
