"Work is health," sang Salvador.

Unemployment "harms health", reveals a study.

It would therefore be urgent to worry more about the health of the unemployed, recommend Tuesday four associations of support for people deprived of employment, by unveiling an investigation on the subject.

Provide better information on health rights at the time of termination of the employment contract;

simplify access to complementary solidarity health;

schedule periodic medical visits during the job search;

provide free access to a psychological help service and basic hygiene products;

and reinforce listening to health issues during employment support.

"It would then be necessary to have an interview with a doctor, or a psychologist"

These are the recommendations made by Solidarités nouvelles in the face of unemployment (SNC), Territories zero long-term unemployed (TZC), Force Femmes and La Cravate solidaire, based on proposals made by job seekers themselves. "Informing about the existence of complementary solidarity health should be done when the balance of any account, when you leave the company", suggests Sylvie Rodriguez, 48, from Avignon, who testified during a press conference organized by associations.

“It would then be necessary to have an interview with a doctor, or a psychologist from Pôle Emploi.

But as far as I am concerned, Pôle emploi has never spoken to me about health, ”added Julia, 55, from Paris.

"Occupational medicine is no longer enough, we need unemployment medicine," summed up the psychosocial risk specialist Michel Debout more than 15 years ago, but "since then we have not made much progress in the health of job seekers. remains insufficiently considered ”, we regret at SNC.

"More than 38% mention a deterioration in their state of health"

The associations are based on a study to which replied 977 people deprived of employment: "more than 38% evoke a deterioration in their state of health" since unemployment, and among the latter "nearly 60% believe that this deterioration is due to unemployment ”.

“In addition to being weakened socially and financially,” adds the study, “people who experience unemployment see their state of health deteriorate as unemployment continues”.

20% of respondents live on less than 800 euros per month and, as a reflection of poverty, 22% say they have given up care for financial reasons in the last six months.

"Advancing the sum of money necessary to cover medical expenses, even if they are then reimbursed, is impossible for them."

And unemployment is particularly detrimental to mental health, underlines the study.

Before being unemployed, 18.5% of respondents felt depressed, “it's 41.9% since they lost their job”.

69% say they have a "worse image" of themselves, "55% feel isolated, 46% have" less desire to take care "of themselves.
