• Hair exfoliation: the thorough 'wash' that leaves the scalp (and hair with more volume) very clean

Before putting our hands to our heads, or our hair, we will clarify the great doubt.

Dermatologists agree that having oily hair is not a direct cause of female alopecia.

Greasy hair, beyond that aspect of constant dirt that it can leave, can cause stinging, itching and, in a more advanced stage, a

weakening of the hair follicle

caused by capillary clogging, which is what in any case could aggravate the fall only if proper hygiene is not followed.

Because, as highlighted by

the Imema clinic (Madrid),

there is an erroneous belief that washing oily hair frequently produces a rebound effect.

And it is the opposite: it is when an excess of

sebaceous secretion

is allowed to

remain on the scalp that could worsen hair loss.

What are the causes of oily hair?

The first thing you should know, as the dermatologist Ricardo Ruiz explains, is that if you have oily hair, it is not because the fat comes out of the hair, but rather from the sebaceous gland that is in the skin. That is why the skin of the scalp must be cleaned frequently, daily if necessary, not just the hair.

The causes of this excess oil on the scalp are multiple. "Stress; the hormonal changes that occur in puberty or menopause; the consumption of alcohol, or habits such as tobacco can affect hair health", lists Dr.

Amira Chehade, a

doctor at the

Insparya Madrid

clinic

.

But greasy hair also depends on external factors;

The change of seasons

can be a trigger for the appearance or

regulation of fat

(in summer, frequent indirect washing of swimming pools and beaches usually improves hair, for example, Chehade says). And some drugs, such as

antibiotics or diuretics,

can also cause excess sebum.

On the other hand, there are pathologies directly related to oily hair, such as

seborrheic dermatitis

, which does not cause alopecia, but aggravates it, due to the fact that the hair follicles do not 'breathe' as they should.

This skin condition manifests itself in different areas, including the

scalp,

and is associated with the production of oily dandruff with itching and inflammation, as explained by the pharmacist

Rocío Escalante, from Arbosana Farmacia.

Babies' 'cradle cap' is actually seborrheic dermatitis, causing scaly patches on the scalp.

Why does female alopecia appear?

On the other hand, let's analyze the reason for female baldness.

The most common is androgenetic alopecia, related to male hormones, which also has a genetic component.

It accounts for 80% of all the alopecia that Dr. Ricardo Ruiz sees in his office and although it occurs more in men, 20-30% of women can suffer it throughout their lives.

"While in men the hair loss is manifested especially in the frontal-temporal area, the temples and the crown, in women it is more noticeable

in the upper area of the scalp,

at the height of the part, and the fall it tends to respect the anterior implantation line ", explains how androgenetic alopecia is explained by Dr.

Eduardo López Bran,

from Imema.

In addition to hormones and the vagaries of genetics, this type of female baldness has two aggravating factors: stress and anxiety.

"This means that women who, in calmer circumstances, do not have

a sufficient genetic load

to express alopecia clinically, do suffer a triggering process of androgenetic alopecia due to the appearance of these factors," says López Bran.

And, are there solutions?

Yes, all is not lost, the expert lists them:

  • Carry out

    adequate hair hygiene,

daily if necessary, to prevent oil from accumulating on the scalp and it does not function or breathe as it should.

  • Apply minoxidil

topically: this active ingredient makes it possible to strengthen the hair in the affected areas, it is effective in approximately 80% of cases, but requires perseverance (two applications a day).

Results are not seen for several months.

  • Ingest vitamins, trace elements and amino acids.

Although these elements do not ensure a slowdown or paralysis of the alopecic process, supplementing the usual diet thanks to them can alleviate the process and support the remaining treatments.

  • Hair transplantation in women.

It is an effective solution, as long as it is practiced taking into account that the intervention has slight differences with respect to the same process in men.

Less hair can be transplanted, and as the treated area is extended further, the results are less spectacular but just as effective.

How to avoid alopecia in oily hair

Whether there are two factors (oily hair and alopecia) as one, the best advice is undoubtedly to

go to a specialist,

because each case is personal and non-transferable.

The first thing that professional will do is analyze your

lifestyle

: diet, what products you use

to take care of your hair,

how much water you drink, whether or not you wear hats ...

This study will give the keys to be able to start any treatment.

You will likely have to change your lifestyle habits when you discover what you are doing wrong that affects your hair.

But do not despair,

there is hope

for oily hair and also for alopecia.
