In a glider .. a young woman wanders around the world alone

The young woman, Zara Rutherford, landed in Seoul on Saturday from Russia, the first leg of her Asian journey, which aims to become the youngest woman to fly solo around the world.

Zara, a 19-year-old British-Belgian woman, started her journey in August from Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport in western Belgium, and aims to cover a distance of 51,000 km covering five continents and 52 countries, including the United States, Greenland, Russia and Colombia.

"It's a challenge," she told reporters upon her arrival at Gimpo International Airport in South Korea with her Shark, a lightweight and fastest glider in the world.

"I was stuck for a month in Alaska due to visa and weather hurdles and a month late in Russia due to the same hurdles. I was hoping to complete my trip by Christmas but I guess it won't happen, but it's an adventure," she added.

She said she will leave for Taiwan on Monday, noting that she expects to complete her trip by mid-January.

With the imposition of more travel restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, Zara said that it is sometimes unable to visit local places in some countries.

Born to pilot parents, Zara will attend university next year and dreams of becoming an astronaut.
