The 24-hour blackout in parts of the Rhein-Sieg district with tens of thousands of people affected has largely been remedied. “Since 6 p.m., more than 21,000 people in Much and Ruppichteroth have been supplied with electricity again. A further 20,000 residents in the localities of Neunkirchen-Seelscheid were gradually switched on from 9.30 p.m., ”announced the utility Westnetz on Saturday evening. The repair of the damage will therefore take a few more days, as the fitters were initially only able to put some lines back into operation temporarily.

The supply had been interrupted in several municipalities since a fire in a transformer station on Friday evening.

41,000 residents in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid, Much and Ruppichteroth have been temporarily without electricity since then.

It was initially unclear in how many households, for example, the heating did not work at the cool temperatures due to a lack of electricity.

According to Westnetz, numerous emergency power generators were put into operation in the affected municipalities.

According to Westnetz's previous knowledge, a short circuit triggered the fire in the substation, as a company spokeswoman said.

The system was badly damaged.

In written communications from Westnetz, there was talk of a technical defect.
