A few days before departures on vacation, the SNCF announced this Friday that it was going to increase the number of checks on the health pass at the station and ask travelers to present it online, upstream of the journey.

Every week, nearly 400,000 checks are carried out on the main lines, or one in four trains.

About 1% of travelers on average show up without a pass.

"Ready to travel"

A few days before the big departures for the Christmas holidays, the SNCF will intensify these checks to reach one in three trains. "This will require us to strengthen our means of control", underlined Alain Krakovitch, director of Voyages SNCF, during a press conference in Gare de l'Est. 5,000 people are already mobilized each month for checks in the 20 major stations in the network, in particular via service providers, said Eliane Barbosa, director of operations at SNCF Gares & Connexions.

To streamline station passages, travelers are encouraged by email and SMS to present their health pass before their trip on the “Prêt à voyage” site, on their smartphone or on a computer.

A green insert, above the QR Code of their virtual ticket, will then guarantee that they have their pass.

They will be able to avoid the queue at the station and go directly to the gantry, which thus checks their ticket and their pass at the same time.

Since its launch in August, 50,000 people have used this device every week.

Enhanced vigilance

In station halls, mobile teams also distribute a bracelet to 70,000 travelers every week in exchange for showing their pass. As in a nightclub, it also allows them to avoid the line in front of the platform. 300,000 are checked before entering the train. "We want to enter into a form of virtuous circle so that more and more people make this combination" between ticket and health pass, underlined Alain Krakovitch. "If everyone has this pass, we will no longer need to do pre-gate checks."

At the Gare de l'Est on Friday morning, more than 1,100 passengers were double checked by five agents in half an hour, before accessing their train for Strasbourg.

A few "blue vests" distributed bracelets in the central hall.

"We will strengthen vigilance: the 5th wave is here", underlined Christophe Fanichet, CEO of SNCF Voyageurs.

"We have not seen a drop in traffic because of the health pass (...) Our challenge today is to continue to make the journey of the traveler more fluid".

In the trains, the bar remains open for the moment, but it is again forbidden to consume on the spot.
