Dimples from Gaza..Cosmetic surgeries for attractive smiles

When the Palestinian Shorouk Shaheen looked at herself in the mirror, she was impressed by the change in her face that she underwent in order to add an artificial dimple on her cheek, a surgery that has become very popular in Gaza.

This young woman who works in the field of communication considered that "a smile is a face or a mirror of a face."

"If your smile is beautiful, you are beautiful," she added, wearing white Dior shoes and carrying a Louis Vuitton bag.

About a month ago, Shurooq (26 years) got what she wanted from the operation she had in a clinic in the center of Gaza City, and she is very satisfied with the dimple on her left cheek, as the result is “better” than she expected, and she intends to repeat the experiment on the other cheek, especially The process is simple, and largely painless.

Although double dimple surgery is common all over the world, what attracted Gaza women to it is that it is relatively inexpensive and safe, unlike other expensive and more dangerous cosmetic surgeries, as the Gaza Strip is a very poor area and the health care system is weak due to the ongoing Israeli siege Since the Hamas movement took control of it in 2007.

"The formation of an artificial dimple is very simple, very easy and very fast" and does not involve any significant risks, as the operation takes only ten minutes, said surgeon Galaa Al-Talmis, who performed the surgery on Shorouk Shaheen, in an interview with AFP.

The groping explained that he uses a local anesthetic on the cheek and mouth before making a small incision in the zygomatic muscle that extends from the cheekbone to the mouth.

He pointed out that he performs the dimple procedure for many young women every month, and most of them request it from him after seeing the results on the faces of their relatives and friends, as they consider that dimples "make the girl more attractive when she laughs and when she speaks."

Talmis, who worked abroad, noted that the process of forming the dimple is more popular with Gazans than with other women in the Arab region, explaining that “the women of Gaza learned about it from those who traveled to Egypt and the Arab Gulf states.”

The doctor stated that its cost "ranges between 30 and 45 dollars per cheek, while it reaches thousands of dollars in some Western clinics," he said.

And this price is much lower than the prices of other plastic surgeries, such as breast augmentation surgery, which costs more than a thousand dollars, and may make those who undergo it subject to gossip or criticism in a very conservative area.

Shorouk Shaheen, who covered her head with a blue handkerchief, stressed that "there is no problem or embarrassment in forming a dimple, as one does not feel that she has done a shameful or shameful act."

"People often ask me where and when I did this, and what the experience was like," she added.

At the "Victoria Beauty Center", which overlooks a garden in Gaza City with rows of palm trees, doctor Hassan Ali Al-Jaish told AFP, "If a woman seeks to create a dimple to be happy, why not?"

Dr. Hassan, who has been performing plastic and reconstructive surgeries since 2018, said he usually receives about 30 requests a month to create dimples.

He added, "If plastic surgery is popular among some women in Gaza, we should not believe that Gazans perform operations every day."

Dr. Hassan, who often performs reconstructive surgeries on Palestinians injured during the wars between Israel and Hamas, believes that "a little happiness and a normal life may alleviate the suffering" experienced by women in Gaza in light of wars, siege and other hardships, "but we must not forget that this suffering is what It still exists."
