It was one of the founding fights of the Marseille Spring, today at the helm of the city.

The ancient quarry of the Corderie, located in the 7th arrondissement, brought to light in 2017 thanks to the construction of a building and from which the first stones that made Marseille came out will be re-buried, the state has decided. .

This decision, anticipated, was notified by mail on December 3 and motivated by the protection of the site currently exposed to the elements, made the municipality react strongly.

"At a time when the Marseillaises are reclaiming their city, their public spaces and their heritage, the State explains to them coldly that their history, their destiny, does not belong to them", reacted Benoît Payan, the mayor. , in a press release.

When it had classified it as a historic monument in 2018, the Ministry of Culture had nevertheless on this occasion committed itself in favor of "the conservation of the site [which was to] be accompanied by its enhancement through specific developments. allowing its visibility ”.

The City indicates, for its part, always wanting to keep its commitments: the promotion of the discovery in the collections of the Museum of History and the creation of a mediation device in the adjoining garden.

As a reminder, three options were on the table: simple burying of the site, the creation of a covering roof, or the realization of a glass paving, with lighting.

We “bury part of the memory of Marseille,” denounces Benoît Payan.
