The fallen film producer Harvey Weinstein is now awaiting a second criminal trial.

A Los Angeles court on Tuesday denied his attorneys' motion to drop the rape and sexual abuse charges against the 69-year-old.

The defense had stated at the hearing that Weinstein was ill.

She also accused the public prosecutor of inadmissibly influencing the grand jury with an expert on rape trauma prior to the indictment.

The Oscar winner and founder of the film companies Miramax and The Weinstein Company (TWC) is said to have sexually abused or raped at least five young actresses and models in California between 2004 and 2013.

Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted of similar crimes in New York in February 2020.

In preparation for the criminal trial against him in Los Angeles, he was transferred to a prison in Southern California last summer.

On May 4, Weinstein is expecting the next court hearing, at which it will be checked whether witnesses are also allowed to testify to "previous bad deeds" by the former Hollywood mogul.

If found guilty, Weinstein could face up to 140 more years in prison.
