The Viviers-du-Lac (Savoie) level crossing is going through its last moments of activity.

Work to destroy PN18, considered one of the most dangerous in France, has started.

They should end in November 2022, reports France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

The system is crossed daily by more than 10,000 vehicles whose drivers are not always respectful of the Highway Code.

The situation is all the more worrying as the intersection between Chambéry and Aix-les-Bains (Savoie) also sees around a hundred trains pass every day.

After 20 years, the level crossing will be replaced by two tunnels.

Safety and fluidity

A budget of 12 million euros has been released for the works by the SNCF, the department, the region, the city and the community of the Grand Lac agglomeration.

The transformation should not interrupt road traffic.

In addition to increased safety, users also expect the project to make car traffic more fluid.
