In the north of Isère, a residue of herbicide was detected in water intended for consumption.

The regional health agency (ARS) of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes announced on Tuesday that it was ESA-metolachlor, a by-product linked to the degradation of S-metolachlor, reports France 3 Auvergne- Rhône-Alpes.

It is a herbicide mainly used in spring crops.

ESA-metolachlor can sometimes find its way to groundwater or to collection points for water consumed by humans.

No health risk, according to the ARS

In Isère, 24 municipalities are concerned.

There, the regulatory limit of 0.1 microgram per liter (μg / L) was exceeded.

These municipalities draw water from a borehole in a cultivated plain, using S-metolachlor.

As the exceedances observed are not greater than 1.3 micrograms per liter, the ARS ensures that there is no “proven health risk for the population concerning this metabolite”.
