• Immunization Spain approves expanding the anticovid vaccination to children from 5 to 11 years old

  • Live Coronavirus, Spain, today

Spain will begin vaccinating children between the ages of 5 and 11 against Covid as of December 15.

The Public Health Commission approved this Tuesday the extension of vaccination in this age range in a meeting that is still continuing.

As Minister

Carolina Darias

has advanced this morning

, the autonomous communities will be in charge of deciding the specific modality for the administration of vaccines.

What vaccine will children receive?

On November 25, 2021, the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use of the European Medicines Agency unanimously agreed to recommend the

authorization of Pfizer's Comirnaty 10 µg vaccine for children

aged

5-11 years

.

Is it different from that of adults?

Yes. The dose that children will receive is one third of what has been administered in adults.

Will the administration be similar to that of adults?

Yes. As in the older age group, it is given as two injections into the muscles of the upper arm.

It is expected that, in the case of children, the administration of the second dose will take place eight weeks after the first puncture, reports Laura G. Ibañes.

What are the safety and efficacy data?

According to data from the Vaccine Commission of the Spanish Pediatric Association, the decision to approve the drug is based on a study carried out in children aged 5 to 11 years that showed that the immune response to a dose of 10 µg of Comirnaty in this group of age, was comparable to that observed with the highest dose (30 µg) in those aged 16 to 25 years (measured by the level of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2). In this study, the vaccine was 90.7% effective (95% CI: 67.7% to 98.3%) in preventing symptomatic infection.

The

most common

side effects

in children ages 5 to 11 are similar to those in people 12 and older.

They include injection site pain, tiredness, headache, redness and swelling at the injection site, muscle pain, and chills.

These effects are usually mild or moderate and improve within a few days of vaccination.

Where will the vaccines be administered?

As advanced this morning by Minister Carolina Darias, who was in Brussels at the EPSCO meeting, which brings together the European Health Ministers, the autonomous communities will be in charge of deciding the specific modality for the administration of vaccines, in centers health, in mass vaccination centers or in schools.

When will the vaccination start?

The vaccination campaign in children is scheduled to begin on December 13, when the first doses of the drug will be received, as initially announced by Minister Darias last week after the

Interterritorial Health Council

held in Córdoba.

Effective administration would begin on December 15.

Spain will receive

1.3 million childhood vaccines

in December and another 2 million vaccines in January.

It is estimated that in Spain there are

3.2 million children

in Spain in the 5 to 11 age group.
