Two teenagers survived a shark attack in southeast Australia.

The two victims, a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, were being treated at Geelong Hospital 75 kilometers southwest of Melbourne and were in "stable condition," local media reported on Tuesday.

The attack occurred in Ocean Grove, a seaside resort in the state of Victoria.

The responsible authorities said a shark had been sighted about 500 meters from the beach.

Eyewitnesses rushed to the young people's aid when they heard their screams, it said.

"The girl had a large bite mark on her leg, under her knee," said Dianne Hobbs, a former nurse who happened to be on the beach.

Her hand was also injured while the boy's back was wounded.

It was possible to stop the bleeding with towels, among other things, until the ambulances arrived.

The beach has been closed until further notice.
