The figure is staggering: around 770,000 drivers are said to be driving without a license in France.
This is the alarming observation made by Le Parisien on Tuesday, after consulting the data from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR).
The number of drivers driving without a license has been increasing year after year for the past decade.
The Ile-de-France daily also recalls that the number of valid permits is of the order of 38 million.
Thus, road accidents involving "unlicensed" sadly illustrate certain statistics.
Last year, 6% of these drivers were involved in a fatal accident, and 3.5% of them were in a personal injury accident.
Likewise, the number of offenses for lack of a license is increasing: from 111,844 in 2016 to 123,219 in 2019.
The increasingly expensive license
Jean-Baptiste Iosca, lawyer in road law, puts forward two main explanations for this phenomenon: on the one hand the cost and the increased difficulties in obtaining the license, and on the other, the road repression which is increasingly accentuated. .
In addition, losing your license can also lead to the loss of your job with regard to salespeople or truck drivers, for example.
Finally, the League against road violence recalls that being involved in an accident may require the driver to reimburse for life any health costs of injured people.
The number of hit and run after an accident increased by 7.4% in 2019.
