Born on September 23, 1930 in Albany, United States, the pianist and singer Ray Charles would have celebrated his 90th birthday in 2020. The recording industry not having mobilized enough for this essential tribute, the Tangerine Records label decided to publish, this fall, an imposing retrospective box set of 6 CDs covering 4 decades of hectic soul-music.

Valérie Ervin, president of the Ray Charles Foundation and collaborator of the "Genius", evokes the history of her former employer and the heritage issues of such an anthology.

Ray Charles was a unique musician and performer of "L'épopée des Musiques Noires". He did not want to appear as a simple African-American artist, however. First of all, he wanted to assert his place in society. The color of his skin should not be a hindrance to his aspirations and his projects. He therefore fought all his life to impose the image of a formidable entrepreneur whose culture went far beyond the contours of the black community. His taste for jazz as for country-music was sincere and brought together diverse audiences who, in unison, acclaimed his vocal, instrumental and orchestral prowess. "

We had a few conversations together about it.

I just think he liked to sing.

Music, for him, had no categories.

According to him, as long as you had a taste for singing, you could perform anything.

He didn't want to be locked into a musical genre.

He confessed to me at the end of his career that he had created his own record company to be able to perform any type of repertoire without being forced to respect the demands of a label or the classifications of the recording market. "

Ray Charles was a quick-witted, clever businessman, he knew how to surround himself with trustworthy collaborators to give credit to his status as an American citizen and to gain the respect of his contemporaries. Joe Adams was his most faithful partner, his double, his gray eminence. He accompanied the artistic destiny of "Genius" for nearly 50 years. Valerie Ervin also inherited the presidency of the "Ray Charles Foundation" under the good auspices of this influential interlocutor. "

It was a hell of a time for me! I did not expect this ... Mr. Adams told me the following: Ray Charles felt that I was the ideal person to take care of this foundation and believed in me. In other words, I wouldn't have stayed with him for so long if he hadn't had faith in me. However, it was a real surprise for me to become the president of the Ray Charles foundation. Our mission is to perpetuate the heritage and cultural heritage of Ray Charles. Originally, it was the Robinson Foundation dedicated to deaf and hard of hearing children. For him, the inability to hear was a much greater handicap than the inability to see. So he created this structure so that children could get hearing aids.Seeing him rejoice at the first results was a real satisfaction for all of us. From 1988, he embarked on the education of the youngest so that they could follow a normal schooling and obtain diplomas. He considered that being educated, especially when one comes from disadvantaged backgrounds, was a priority. Our mission is therefore to perpetuate his social commitment by using the profits of his songs to undertake new operations through the foundation. Obviously, our role is also to ensure that its name resists the erosion of time. He kept telling me: "Preserve my name and my music!" I made him a promise. My role is therefore to cherish this heritage and to multiply charitable operations ".From 1988, he embarked on the education of the youngest so that they could follow a normal schooling and obtain diplomas. The "True Genius" box set is not just a simple anthology.

It plunges us into an American story of the 20th century, that of a combative man who knew how to overcome the obstacles set up in his path.

Poverty, segregation, blindness, torments, excesses ultimately never weakened his desire to live.

Only illness got the better of his unwavering dynamism.

Her last album,

Genius loves company

, released in 2004, remains a wonderfully touching moment for the young collaborator that was Valerie Ervin at the time: "

I'll be frank with you, Ray Charles knew time was running out when he recorded this album. Therefore, when he started working on this record a year before he passed away, we felt he really cared about it. He never spoke openly about his illness during the registration process, but we were seeing his health decline. In the last moments, his life was divided between chemotherapy sessions and studio sessions. He has shown admirable resilience. After recording, he gave me a mission. He said to me: "I'm counting on you to get this album out on schedule. I've done everything I can. Now it's up to you!" He was very happy with what he had produced and he was aware that his journey was coming to an end. For me to see him in the studio, surrounded by all his musician friends, giving the best of himself was both a privilege and a very moving moment. I will never forget those moments ”.
