We invited Shim Jae-myung, who produced the movie 'Tae-il', and Hong Joon-pyo, director.



Q. The animation 'Taeil'…

what kind of work is it?



[Hong Jun-pyo/Director of the movie 'Tae-il': The title was also named Tae-il in order to approach the character that we only remembered as the martyr Jeon Tae-il in a more friendly way.

Q. Corona influence…

Is the film industry too difficult? 



[Shim Jae-myung/CEO of 'Myung Film': The global film industry is in a very big crisis.

because of the corona pandemic.

It is difficult for me as well.]




Q. Why did you create 'Taeil' at this point?



[Shim Jae-myung/CEO of 'Myung Film': I've wanted to make a movie about this person's story for a long time rather than now. So, in 2011, the animation we made, 'The Hen Who Came Out of the Yard' was a huge success, and now I got courage from it, and after seeing the cartoon called Taeil again, I thought that animation would be universally accessible and easily accessible. So I made a decision. In fact, it was completed after 10 years of making the decision.]



Q. How was it when you were offered to direct 'Taeil'?



[Hong Jun-pyo/Director of the movie 'Tae-il': Rather than the first feature film, the point that I had to deal with the death of Jeon Tae-il was quite troublesome, and I didn't even live in that era. I still studied when I was young, but I didn't know the details, so I thought that I would be able to do this work only when I became closer to the martyr Jeon Tae-il like a close friend. So it seems that I started by researching a lot and doing a lot of research in various ways.]



Q. Background/personal expression… Did you pay close attention?



[Hong Jun-pyo/Director of the movie 'Tae-il': I wanted to tell the story a little more realistically.So, from each small movement to the facial expressions, we put a lot of effort to translate this into a picture through the actors' real acting, and the starting point was that we got a lot of information through filming like the real actors, and the animators also shared that information. I think I was able to work on it in a bit more detail based on it.]




Q. What was your special focus on?



[Shim Jae-myung/CEO of 'Myung Film': As the director said, I want to draw a beautiful image like a young man from our warm neighborhood so that we can approach not only important characters in our modern history but also very comfortable and emotionally. So, I made an effort so that the story of the martyr Jeon Tae-il and the story of labor issues could be easily understood and approached by all generations.]



Q. Did you hear

that it was a

citizen-participating animation?



[Shim Jae-myung/CEO of 'Myung Film': It is very difficult to get an investment for a feature-length animation. So, after drifting for a few years, we were able to start production with the support of public institutions, and we started a fundraising campaign together with the Jeon Tae-il Foundation. So, civic groups, labor unions, and people from all walks of life supported our proposal, and close to 20,000 people helped. In fact, 9,000 names are listed in the ending credits of the movie. So that scene is only 9 minutes long, but people who have seen the movie also said that the ending credits came closer than the main story.]



Q. 50 years ago, the truth… How did you express it?



[Hong Joon-pyo/Director of the movie 'Tae-il': There are parts that we can just pass on to the story of an old man.

Actually, 50 years have passed, so I had to think a little about how to approach the current generation.

In fact, we are simply young people in their early 20s when we look at them.

So, rather than saying that it is possible because he is a great man, there may be many young people, and there are many generations these days, but Taeil in the animation is telling the story of ordinary people.]




Q. How do you want to reach the audience?



[Shim Jae-myung/CEO of 'Myung Film': Although he was a very kind and warm-hearted young man, he did not end with such compassion and acted again to change the unfair reality. I think it would be very rewarding if it could be evaluated as such a film that provides an opportunity for modern people to look back.]
