• Two women meet in the hospital where they give birth.

  • “Madres parelas” interweaves their stories with sensitivity.

  • Pedro Almodovar paints beautiful portraits of women by evoking the history of Spain.

All about mothers: such could be the subtitle of

Madres Paralelas

by Pedro Almodovar, discovered at the opening of the Venice Film Festival.

The Spanish director reunites with Penélope Cruz and Rossy de Palma and reveals Milena Smit in this film which juggles with his favorite themes.

Women are, as always, at the center of a story rich in dramatic twists and turns.

The meeting of two mothers about to give birth gives the "la" to a complex work that takes the viewer in its meanders.

"It is a tense and content drama, difficult to interpret and with a heroine who is perhaps not a model of virtue, but which attracted me precisely for this reason", explains Pedro Almodavar in the press kit.

His talent as a storyteller is undeniable when he plays with time and space to evoke what has always fascinated him: blood ties and the relationship between mothers and children.

The secrets too, which poison the lives of the protagonists sometimes over several generations.

History and emotions

Secrets, there are many in

Madres Paralelas

and their explosion is as painful as it is saving.

Between early pregnancy and late pregnancy, Pedro Almodovar paints sensitive portraits by plunging into female psychology but also into Spanish history where the Civil War caused deep wounds that are struggling to heal.

The intelligence of the story carries the audience in a sober and complex film, undoubtedly not the most flamboyant of its author, but strong enough to be endearing.

At 72 years old, the king of Movida has not finished moving.
