The La Villemarqué library in Quimper (Finistère) holds nearly 1,650 books and 40 periodicals that belonged to Théodore Hersat de la Villemaqué (1815-1895).
While sorting the books, the librarian discovered a rare manuscript published in 1542 retracing the history of Brittany, reports
Le Télégramme
.
The work entitled
General Customs of the Country and Duchy of Brittany
was written in Gothic characters.
Inside was a little note saying: "Very rare edition."
The National Library kept only very incomplete fragments ”.

More than three copies in the world
“According to my research, there are only three copies left.
And this is the one that is best preserved, ”explained the librarian.
The discovery was made at the end of the valuation of the archives carried out in Quimper between 2018 and 2021.
Several annotations were observed in the book.
The latter allowed the experts to be able to retrace the course of this work and in particular to know that a lawyer would have brought it around 1787 in this library.
