Downgrade this report that I couldn't see.

Eight members of the Catholic Academy denounced the “faulty methodology”, the “serious deficiencies” and the “questionable” recommendations of the commission on child crime in the Church (Ciase), which its president Jean- Marc Sauvé.

Published in early October, the commission's report caused a shock wave in the institution by estimating at 330,000 the number of people over 18 years of age who have been subjected to sexual violence since 1950, when they were minors, from the from clerics, religious or people in connection with the Church.

In solidarity with the victims anyway

More than a month later, eight of the approximately 200 to 250 members of this Academy, which brings together Catholic intellectuals, questioned these conclusions in a 15-page text revealed by

La Croix

. Among the signatories are the president of the Academy Hugues Portelli, professor emeritus at the University of Paris II, Philippe Capelle-Dumont, professor of theology at the University of Strasbourg, or the philosopher Pierre Manent.

The authors specify that their text is not binding on the Academy - of which Jean-Marc Sauvé is a member - and that they "intend to be in solidarity with the victims".

They first denounce the "flawed and contradictory methodology" of the Ciase, in particular the figure of 330,000 victims, resulting from an Ifop poll and used by an Inserm team.

In their eyes, there is "a gulf between this estimate" and the other figures obtained (2,738 with the call for testimonials, and 4,832 to 27,803 via the work on the archives).

Numbers and maybe

"The function of such a figure is to close the discussion", regret the signatories, judging that "the spirit which governs the analysis of the causes and the formulation of recommendations seems a priori ideological". The Ciase report also presents "serious deficiencies in the theological, philosophical and legal fields", they add. The signatories regret, for example, that the report only mentions The Gospels "and seems to ignore the other canonical texts of the New Testament".

According to them, the 45 recommendations are "questionable as long as their premises are".

Formulated by a “Commission without ecclesial or civil authority”, they “can only be indicative in guiding the action of the Church and of her faithful.

Some could prove to be ruinous for the Church, ”they warn.

In general, "it is up to the Church alone (...) that it is up to freely undertake (...) the necessary reforms", they say.

"Challenges as serious as they are indigent"

Jean-Marc Sauvé judged these "questioning as serious as they are indigent". None "is likely to call into question our analyzes". "I will respond in a detailed manner to all (these) allegations", he promised, inviting the Catholic Academy "to carry out a scientific study with all the necessary scientific guarantees, on sexual violence in the Catholic Church, as in our society, so that she may or may not support her suspicions ”.

"I am ready at any time to debate publicly with Hugues Portelli", he said again.

According to him, “it is not enough to insinuate and denigrate or even to denounce serious biases or ethical and methodological failures.

We need clarity (…) of the contradictory debate and, for our detractors, proofs, which implies on their part an essential work which, in reality, has not really started ”.

Founded in 2008, the Catholic Academy of France brings together Catholic intellectuals in particular to "advance reflection on selected themes, intellectual or social topicality".
