• Direct Belgium cancels its Christmas markets

The United Kingdom will reintroduce the mandatory PCR within two days of arriving in the country (plus quarantine until confirming that the test has been negative) in response to the

new international alert for the

Omicron

variant

of Covid19

.

"People are going to be able to continue traveling, but we are going to implement new preventive and temporary measures," according to what "Premier" Boris Johson reported at a press conference.

At least two cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in recent hours in the British Isles, one in Essex and the other in Nottingham. The

two cases are apparently connected and correspond to people who have recently traveled to southern Africa

and are currently in quarantine.

The British Government has included ten countries in its "red list" -

South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique

- and does not rule out including new countries in which it detects a high presence of the variant , apparently more resistant to vaccines.

Boris Johnson announced that the use of masks in stores and in public transport will be mandatory again, and referred to the announcement that the Secretary of Health Sajid Javid will make in the next few hours to know in detail all the measures.

The "premier"

avoided speculating about the possibility of a new confinement in the coming weeks

and even predicted that this Christmas "will be considerably better than last year."

"We don't yet know how effective vaccines are against this new variant," Johnson warned.

The "premier" anticipated a new boost to the third booster vaccine, which so far reaches 23% of the population.

Even with two doses or a third, visitors to the UK or returning British will have to undergo PCR on the second day of arrival.

For two months, the mandatory nature of the PCR

had given way to a simple antigen test on

the second day for those twice vaccinated (without the need to isolate themselves until the result was known).

The United Kingdom again surpassed the barrier of 50,000 daily cases this week, although on Saturday there were 39,567 cases and 131 deaths.

Medical adviser Chris Whitty confirmed that it occurred in November after the fall recorded in October, but assured that the number of deaths and hospitalizations continues to fall.
