What happened on that day in April 1982?

On the 25th, SBS 'The Story of the Day Biting the Tail' (hereinafter 'Kkokomu'), the episode 'Korea Evil War - Woo Beom-gon Massacre' was aired.

The night of April 26, 1982, Gungryu-myeon, Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. At the time of the Korean War, a mysterious gunfire resounded in a remote village among the remote areas that even the People's Army could not find. On this day, the villagers gathered in one place for a neighborhood meeting and were terrified for an instant, and then someone found a resident, Jeon Jeon-bae.

And the unbelievable news came to him. His youngest sister, who worked as an operator at the post office, died. Jeon then headed to the post office to find his younger brother, despite gunshots echoing outside. And soon a terrible scene unfolded for him.

At the post office where his youngest brother Eun-sook Jeon worked, all the employees including him died. This was because the criminal targeted the post office to isolate the village by cutting off the communication means, and all the post office staff suffered catastrophe.

It wasn't just the post office. Gungryuji Station right in front of the post office, even today, Jijidae was not well. All the windows were broken and the police officers were nowhere to be seen. And then, gunfire started again in Apgok-ri, about 600 meters from the post office.

On that day, there was only one criminal who turned the village into an abyss. He carried two rifles on his shoulder and carried grenades dangling from his shoulders, aiming at the villagers. He went from door to door to find a house with a light on, and shot and killed people mercilessly.

Unlike houses with lights on, houses with lights out saved lives. And there were houses that saved their lives in a short drive. At that time, a taxi driver in this village, Mr. Jeon, went from house to house and told them to turn off the lights because it was dangerous. And he was found dead in an alleyway, causing regret.

Less than an hour after the shooting began, 19 people were killed. And the criminal soon appeared in Ungye-ri. The criminal found a supermarket in Ungye-ri and knocked on the door and asked the super hostess for a cider. And the super hostess, without any vigilance, opened the door and handed him a cider.

The reason was that he was wearing a police uniform when he visited the supermarket late at night. And he was a real cop. Residents did not even dream that he was the culprit. The super hostess was warmly welcomed by 27-year-old police officer Woo Beom-gon from the Gungryu branch.

He casually lied to the villager who asked what was going on, saying, "There is an emergency because a public servant has appeared." After he drank all the drinks he asked for, he loaded his gun and fired right away, killing him.

Police Officer Woo, who excelled in Taekwondo 3rd Dan, Hapkido 3dan, and especially in shooting, appeared in this village four months ago. He had an accident while working for the Seoul Metropolitan Police, and was relegated to this place. And he fell in love with a woman from the village, Mr. Jeon. However, at the Jeon family, the relationship between them was adamantly opposed. The reason was because of the injection of Police Officer Woo, who turns into a dog if he only drank alcohol.

But their love was hard to break. In the end, despite the opposition of the family, they started living together, and two months passed, and April 26, 1982, the day of trouble, came.

On that day, a fly landed on the chest of Police Officer Wu, who was sleeping at home. When Jeon Sa saw this, he struck Police Officer Wu's chest to kill the fly sitting on his chest. Then, Police Officer Wu became very angry and the two quarreled violently.

Afterwards, police officer Woo, who went to work at the police station, was not feeling well, so he drank two bottles of soju and went home and started assaulting his girlfriend, Jeon. He also cursed and assaulted the residents who stopped them. Residents, who could not see his fate, reacted violently to this, and Police Officer Woo lost his temper and headed to Jiseo's arsenal saying, "Everyone ignores me? I'll see the end today."

Police Officer Woo, who collected two worms, bullets and grenades from Jiseo's arsenal, killed the post office workers and cut off the communication network at 9:40. And the full-fledged frantic murder play began.

Police Officer Woo opened fire at every lit house and threw a grenade at crowds, killing people without hesitation. And when he met villagers while on the move, he immediately aimed and killed them.

At 12 pm, he found a noisy house in Pyeongchon-ri. This is Jongbaek Lee's uncle's funeral. He paid tribute to him, and no one found him strange. But suddenly he started screaming and swearing, and soon opened fire, killing everyone. In particular, he found a crying baby and shot and killed the baby, saying, "Is there anything that hasn't died yet?"

The villagers gathered at the sound of gunfire in the middle of the night. And there was also a 22-year-old National Guard, Lee Byung-ju Seo. He left the house to report and met Police Officer Wu on the way to Jiseo. Lee Byung Seo, relieved by his appearance, did not think he was the culprit. And police officer Woo reassured him by lying calmly, as he had done before. Also, since it was an emergency, I had all the villagers gather in one house.

In response, Lee Byeong said that they were all gathered at his eldest father's house and took Police Officer Woo there. Police Officer Woo said, "Everyone, please enter the room because it's dangerous." The villagers became hostages, not hostages.

But where are all the police in the Gungryu branch? Gungryu Branch, one of the smallest branches in the country, has only four employees. On this day, Chief Ji and Cha Seok went on a hot spring trip to receive hospitality from village officials. And they returned to the village just after 10 pm.

Upon learning of Police Officer Woo's crime, they were greatly relieved that they were still alive. Then he loaded his rifle with live ammunition and went outside. However, the place they were headed was not where Police U was, but in the opposite direction to the direction in which he moved and hid. They only cared about their own safety without taking appropriate measures such as searching for criminals, evacuating residents, warning and suppressing the situation. In particular, in front of Jiseo, even though there was a system capable of broadcasting information throughout the village, it was not even done, so it was a shock.

In fact, the first report was made to the Uiryeong Police Station located an hour away from Gungryu-myeon at 10:30. A resident heard the gunfire and went to the chief's house to report it. And it turns out that the youngest sister of the post office operator Jeon Jeon-bae, Jeon Eun-sook, connected the code between Lee Jang-jip's administrative phone and Uiryeong post office just before her death, and it turned out that it was possible to report it.

Reporter Lee, who heard the news that the operator had been shot late on the day, shed tears, saying that the report was possible because they were faithful to their last mission until just before hiding.

Eun-suk Jeon, a 23-year-old operator who was faithful to her mission even until the moment of her death, drew more attention as it contrasted with the police who cared only about her own life.

However, the police did not go straight to the village even though they received a report around 10:30. An absurd situation that an employee with the arsenal key went to drink and could not be dispatched was revealed, causing frowns. At least, the Sanggatjib disaster could have been prevented, but he missed that opportunity, and, after arriving in the village, did not start a search immediately, but rather ambushed at the bridge away from the scene and missed another opportunity.

In fact, there was no on-site manager at the site at the time. The head of the Uiryeong Police Station, who was in charge of the scene, was in Busan that day, and after receiving a report late that day, he returned to the police station and was only reporting to the upper level without taking any action.

Residents who visited the Uiryeong Police Station to report this were outraged. The police chief said, "It's night, where are you going?" In response, the resident asked, "All the people in my neighborhood are dying, will the chief sit down?" Then the police kicked the residents out, saying they were rebelling against the chief.

At 3:30 in the morning, when the gunfire stopped for over two hours, the police entered the village. And Police Officer Wu noticed a light approaching from afar. Residents who saw this rejoiced, saying, "I think the police force volunteers for Wu have arrived. Now we are alive." However, at this time, Police Officer Woo jumped up from his seat and entered the room with eyes that felt alive. Then he detonated a grenade inside the room and died along with everyone in the room.

He took the lives of people without going alone until the moment of his death. So, Police Officer Wu's six-hour slaughter came to an end.

In the case of Police Officer Wu, a whopping 90 people were killed. Of the 144 rounds he stole from the arsenal, only nine were left. Meanwhile, the police did not fire a single bullet and did not save a single resident.

The victims of this case were all men, women and children. In addition, there were 16 children under the age of 20, of which 6 were under the age of 10, and there were also children who were 1 month old.

56 killed and 34 injured. It is unprecedented in the world that a single person inflicted 90 casualties, and this incident was shamefully entered into the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest single-person crime record in a short time.

In fact, police officer Woo was appointed as a security guard at the Blue House four months after becoming a police officer. However, he was demoted after 8 months. The cause is the violent injection. Nicknamed the “crazy tiger”, he was judged ineligible for the Blue House guard service after 8 months and was transferred to the Gungryu branch of Uiryeong-gun.

The storytellers and storytellers expressed regret that this incident could not have happened in the first place if they had been dismissed rather than transferred to another place after being judged ineligible.

It was also claimed that the first report of this case was at 10:05. Considering that the first gunshot was heard around 9:40 a.m., a report was filed immediately after the crime. In addition, traces of torn up the police's situation log, which took notes on reporting related matters, were found and drew attention.

In response, the police claimed that it was confirmed that the two pages were torn and rewritten due to a mistake in the record, but it raised suspicions that this was a manipulation of the time of the first report. However, the final conclusion was that there were no charges.

The more the investigation, the more suspicions and criticisms about this case. But follow-up was quicker than ever. The Chun Doo-hwan regime, which took power through a military coup, was busy trying to capture the public's opinion. Then, the terrible incident that occurred was like pouring cold water into the improving atmosphere.

In response, the Chun Doo-hwan administration calmed public sentiment by paying condolences and funeral expenses, tax cuts, waiver of children's school fees, withholding training for reserve forces, and promising village development projects. Also, reports related to the incident quickly disappeared within a week of the incident due to media oppression.

Immediately after the incident, a funeral was held for three days in the village. Sangju Moon, who had a portrait of his father at his father's house, held three funerals. He lost his mother, three children and nephews together.

A reporter who covered the scene at the time said, "I remember the resident who had a language barrier. Because he couldn't express his words, it was so sad that he couldn't cry as much as he could when he left, and it was like crying in his heart. I cried," he explained, explaining the sad situation at the time.

The storytellers said that the most difficult thing to prepare for today's story was the numbers. According to the data, the number of deaths in this case was different for each relevant ministry. According to media reports, the initial number of deaths was 56, but the number has changed to 62 deaths 10 years ago. According to experts, the death toll is 62.

In order to know the exact facts, the broadcast requested the disclosure of information from relevant ministries such as the National Police Agency. In addition, the police stated that 56 people were listed in the initial report, but the information of the additional deaths, such as the case of death due to severe injuries after the incident, has not been confirmed.

Usually, incidents that cause great damage leave a white paper to inform the public about the incident. This is because you have to remember correctly to avoid repeating the same thing. However, there was no white paper on the case of Police Officer Wu, one of the worst murders.

In addition, it was regrettable that a memorial monument was not erected to comfort the souls of those who died with different stories. On April 26, next year, the 40th anniversary of the police officer Wu shooting incident. The victims' families said, "It is my hope that the memorial service will be held in front of the memorial next year."

Finally, about the story of that day, the storyteller and friends said, "I was surprised that such an incident occurred and that I did not know it." "It was an incident that could have been prevented if the circumstances had changed a little at that time. There was definitely a chance."

He added, "What would it have been like if the people who had been to the hot springs had only come to look for Police Officer Woo?" "Those who really need to be protected fled to the other side. The situation would have been different if they had fulfilled their responsibilities in their respective places."

Red Velvet's Seulgi said, "I hope that a memorial monument will be erected as a reminder of this incident and the victims through this broadcast."

Jang Seong-gyu emphasized that he should fulfill his duty even now, saying, "It's not that the bereaved family wants something big, but aren't they living with one wish for the rest of their lives? .
