• After the death of Jean-Claude Guibal, Yves Juhel was chosen by 18 votes against 17 to succeed him.

  • But following this election, 22 resignations, out of a total of 35 elected, were recorded, the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture confirmed on Tuesday at

    20 minutes.

  • According to Sandra Paire, the other candidate to succeed Jean-Claude Guibal, the resigners, of which she is part, does not wish to continue working with an elected majority thanks to the six votes of the opposition group "Menton tomorrow".

It is now official: the Mentonnais will have to vote again.

After the death of Mayor LR Jean-Claude Guibal on October 25, the current municipal assembly lapses.

If the former second assistant Yves Juhel was indeed chosen with 18 votes against 17, to succeed him, on November 9, the number of advisers still in post today is no longer sufficient.

The prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes confirms this Tuesday at

20 Minutes

that 22 resignations, out of a total of 35 elected officials, have been recorded.

According to Sandra Paire, the other candidate to succeed Jean-Claude Guibal, the resigners, of which she is part, does not wish to continue working with an elected majority thanks to the six votes of the opposition group "Menton tomorrow".

The resignations meet "the legal criteria"

Yves Juhel disputed a large part of these resignations, but they do meet "the legal criteria", argues the prefecture which specifies that they were written in "unequivocal terms", are "covered with the stamp of the town hall" and " dated November 9 ”.

The municipal council is therefore now composed of twenty-one people, that is to say the remaining thirteen to which are added the last eight members of the list of Jean-Claude Guibal “United for Menton” who had not been elected in 2020. However, as regulated by article L2122-8 of the General Code of Local Authorities, a new ballot is necessary if the municipal council loses "one third or more of its members".

"It is therefore necessary to organize a full municipal by-election within three months, that is to say before February 9", state the services of the State.

A spy system at the town hall?

The prefect must thus take in the coming days an order to convene the voters and especially to fix the date of the first round of this new ballot. It must first be the subject of discussions with "the elected officials of the territory concerned", specifies the prefecture. In the meantime, the current municipal council can “deliberate validly”.

But the next few weeks still promise to take place in a heavy atmosphere in the town hall of Menton.

While Yves Juhel filed a complaint after the theft of documents, implicating "elected officials", and Sandra Paire attacked him for defamation, a new crisis shakes the town hall.

An audit of the city's computer systems would have confirmed the existence of an e-mail surveillance system.
