Chinanews client, Beijing, November 23 (Reporter Yuan Xiuyue) Recently, the eight-season high-scoring variety show "Dream Transformer" was on the hot search, but this time it was because a netizen called the "worst design" "The case "turned over".

"Spent millions to build red brick houses" cause controversy

The program mode of "Dream Renovator" is to select ordinary families with living difficulties across the country, and at a limited fee, through the renovation of the designer, to complete the seemingly impossible home improvement dream.

In this issue of "Dream Transforming Home", the clients are Du Xingchang and Helan who work in farming in Baiyin Shuiquan Town, Gansu Province.

All five children in the family have married and started their lives in the city, but the old couple are not used to life in the city and insist on staying in the countryside.

The couple's biggest wish is to have a strong house to help them withstand the harsh winter in the Northwest.

More importantly, they want to renovate the house better, so that after their children retire, they can return to the countryside and adapt to the life here, with a solid foundation.

Tao Lei, the designer in charge of the project, also grew up in the countryside and is familiar with the rural lifestyle.

From his point of view, the client's original living environment lacked orderliness and effectiveness, it was very inconvenient to live, and the room was very narrow and low.

His plan is to build a building that neither caters to the trend of urban life, but also conforms to the feeling of future rural life.

The designer followed the square structure of the original house and included the jujube garden with a circular courtyard wall.

In the style of the house, a combination of red brick, concrete and wood is used.

The house is on the second floor, with a total of six bedrooms.

In the program, the client, Lao Du, applauded frequently after visiting and expressing satisfaction, "It's better than I expected."

However, after the show was broadcast, it was questioned by netizens.

The most questioned is that the total cost of the design was 1.328 million yuan, but a red brick house was built, which should be "the level of turning a face on the spot."

In addition, netizens also pointed out that the red brick hollowed-out house did not consider keeping warm.

The red walls inside looked particularly depressing, and the lighting was too poor.

The house has no aging design, no storage space, narrow kitchen, poor practicality and so on.

Many netizens believe that the designer did not respect the wishes of the client.

The program group's response: the work is not yet completed

With the growing controversy, the "Dream Transformer" program team also issued an explanation, saying that due to the impact of the epidemic in the northwest region, the reconstruction has been interrupted many times.

The renovation had not yet been completed when the show was filmed. Due to the low local temperature, normal construction could not be carried out. Part of the roof and most of the walls in the house were not completed.

Therefore, what is presented in the program is an unfinished work.

We have negotiated with the client's family before recording, and will continue to improve after the beginning of the spring next year, and the return visit will continue to be reported.

As for the total cost of this renovation project, the program team and the client’s children will each bear half of it.

The explanation also stated that it will continue to improve the decoration based on the client's actual living environment and the suggestions of netizens, so as to give a satisfactory explanation to the client's family and the audience of the dream change.

Program group response

The relevant person in charge of the design team Tao Lei (Beijing) Architectural Design Co., Ltd. also responded to the media, “Many of the doubts in the evaluation are caused by not watching the program in full or being unfamiliar with the architectural space. The hollow brick wall only appears on the courtyard wall. Or the outside of the high glass window in the bathroom, not on the main wall, will not have any effect on heat preservation."

"Our design considerations are different from pure interior design. The service life of our buildings is not less than 50 years. We look at the issue of rural construction with a global perspective and a forward-looking perspective." As for the cost issue, the above-mentioned The person in charge did not respond directly. He stated that the construction on the site has not been completely affected by the epidemic, and there are some problems that may easily cause misunderstandings in the current brief description. In the follow-up, the team will give a complete project introduction to the project.

The client Du Xingchang also told the media that the house has not been handed over, and the house has not been moved in. The quality of the house can only be assessed objectively after moving in. The design and construction costs were paid at that time.

Design should also be people-oriented

In fact, judging from the program, it is not surprising that this period of transformation has caused controversy.

In the past "Dream Renovation Home" program, many houses challenged the designer's limit, such as the strange water tower house, bunker building, cracked house, and 14 square meters of space and 7 square meters of school district housing squeezed by 11 people. And the renovation cost of only 30,000 houses and so on.

The designer must satisfy the client's needs in a limited space and at a limited cost.

Many designers are well received because they not only possess professional skills, but also have humanistic care to meet people's emotional needs.

In contrast, the reconstruction of a two-story building in the northwestern countryside is not an extreme case.

Even though the epidemic has brought a lot of difficulties to construction, increased costs, and the house has not yet been completed, whether it is designed for the residents can be seen in many details.

The house is ultimately for people to live in, not as an exhibition hall.

There is nothing wrong with the artistry, but is the artistry that is not human-oriented really so necessary?

The program team and designers may wish to use this case as an opportunity to think about it.
