The

Generalitat of Catalonia will no longer send more patients abroad to receive proton therapy treatment

, if the therapeutic options in Madrid, where there are two centers, are adequate. The Catalan parliament voted last week in favor of

a proposal from the Citizens party presented by deputy Anna Grau

and which achieved this important step for many cancer patients and their families.

Grau tells this newspaper that "when we questioned the minister, he reluctantly admitted that it was necessary to refer to Madrid and promised to do so in the future. Our interpellation was followed by a motion to which we did not expect anyone to sign up, but in the end we had amendments from all the groups [except the CUP and the PP], who did not want to be left out.

We accepted the amendments from Junts and ERC in one of the key points, which makes direct reference to the commitment to refer children within

, not outside of Spain, to commit them more and to be able to demand with greater force their fulfillment ".

One point that

they failed to carry out was the commitment to cover the expenses of families

who had to travel to receive treatment outside of Catalonia.

Grau explains that "the section that contained the provision of financial aid to families that still have to take their children abroad, just because it was the result of an amendment by Vox, was rejected. Only we, Vox and the PP voted for it." Something that the deputy regrets, “

because it shows that how pure and hard sectarianism can vote against what citizens need and also have the right

.” However, Grau's party does not throw in the towel and affirms that “we will return to request aid for families through our amendment to the budget. "

key step

From the Columbus Foundation, Javier García Cogorro, receives this news with joy because he considers that "a strange situation is being redirected" and believes that many new families will be helped. The same that Matilda's mother, Sofía, transfers to this newspaper, who believes that telling her daughter's story "has accomplished its goal."

The

stories of Alma and Ithiel

, among others,

will no longer be repeated

, who, in the first onslaught of the pandemic in Europe,

March 2020, had to fly to Germany and Switzerland

to remove the tumor from their body.

Now that the old continent is experiencing one of the most dramatic waves, it helps to put into context the situation that two families had to go through some 20 months ago.

Montse, Ithiel's mother, wishes that "all this that we have been through and denounced is worth it so that others do not go through it."

Digna, the mother of the Soul, also considers that "it is beautiful news".

In full pandemic

Digna remembers those days with bitterness, because

to the bad news that her daughter had cancer, all the obstacles and problems of traveling abroad to receive treatment were added

in the middle of the explosion of Covid cases. "We were there all the confinement, two and a half months. The Covid truncated all the plans we had."

Five-year-old Alma had a radiosarcoma in her jaw

. He had to receive 'radio' and 'chemo'. But the doctors soon saw that the most appropriate therapy was protons, they were more "direct" because they would not leave sequelae in the tissues or nearby organs.

"From the Vall D'Hebrón Hospital they decided to divert us to Germany. At no time did we contemplate Madrid. We traveled just before the bolt in March.

The idea was that my husband, Miguel, would accompany us on Saturday and return on Sunday

. Alma's twin, Aleix, was left with his grandparents.

But Miguel was never able to return. There were no flights, no possibility due to confinement

.

"

They left on March 14 and returned at the end of May.

"There you meet other parents in the same situation and you find out that there are other communities, such as Andalusia, that did lead to Madrid.

The worst thing is that if something is complicated, the language barrier, in addition to the economic one, supposes an important obstacle "

.

Not only did Alma receive her proton therapy treatment at the West German Proton Therapy Center (WPE), she was also given the last reminder dose of 'chemo' because they would not return on the precise date.

Ithiel with her mother Montse.EM

Montse

, Ithiel's mother, also looks

back on a few weeks of anguish with many changes of plans

. "First we thought we were going to Madrid, but they told us it was not possible. So they assigned us to Nice. Well,

we prepared everything to go there

. Not only was it going to receive a treatment, but I tried to find out well what things we could to do together during the medical stay, to get to know the area.

I wanted to create a pleasant trip despite everything

. But at the last minute, they changed their mind, and we were referred to Switzerland. "

For Ithiel it was not the first time.

When he was just over a year old, he was detected a childhood ependymoma (a common tumor in children that is located in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord) and he traveled to Switzerland in 2012 to treat it.

"

But now, with possibilities in our country, why did we have to go abroad? It is because they are things that are not understood"

, emphasizes Montse.

Ithiel has no serious consequences from that first 'run-in' with cancer almost a decade ago.

"

They told us that it was going to be very delicate and that it could have effects, but it only needed growth hormone

. And, cognitively, yes, it needs reinforcement classes, although not beyond that of other children."

Montse and Digna agree that

children view everything with resignation

.

"

Ithiel sometimes asked me why we couldn't go to Madrid

. We have family in Salamanca and in the process we would have been accompanied."

Shared loneliness is what ultimately remains for families.

"You interact with other Spaniards, families in the same situation, who you know understand you. But we were far from home, with my other son at his grandparents' house, whose routine had also been broken due to the start of the pandemic.

Alma He has never complained, he is very, very strong. His brother never expressed how he spent those days

, away from his sister and his parents; now is when he sometimes asks if we are going to go back to the hospital ", says Digna
