The French Biodiversity Office (OFB) confirmed on Monday that the animal observed at the end of last week near Bayeux (Calvados) was indeed a gray wolf.
The investigation is continuing to find out if it is the same individual as the one spotted at the beginning of November in the department of Eure, France Bleu Normandie report.
The gendarmerie had transmitted to the OFB of Normandy photos taken by several witnesses in Sully, Maisons and Sommervieu (Calvados).
Experts had visited the scene and found fingerprints.
According to them, "it is indeed a wolf", confirmed Nathalie Pfeiffer, host of the Loup-Lynx network at the OFB.
Genetic analyzes to come
Specialists on Monday found hairs to be analyzed to determine if they come from a wolf and if it is the animal already observed in the Eure.
For this, droppings are necessary.
While the wolf reappeared in Seine-Maritime in 2020, "this is the first time in a very long time that we have seen one in Calvados," said Nathalie Pfeiffer.
Reassuring, she wished to recall that since the return of the wolf in France, no interaction with humans has been observed.
The wolf being an opportunistic animal, it could however turn to poorly protected farms for food.
Professionals are therefore advised to check their enclosures carefully.
