• Designated the 2022 French Capital of Culture, Villeurbanne will have a total of 700 events, including 200 concerts, 300 shows and 30 festivals giving pride of place to young people.

  • A “Youth Festival” will take place from June 3 to 5, designed and produced by around 100 volunteers aged 12 to 25, in the Feyssine natural park.

  • The Fête de la Musique, on June 21, will be transformed into “the biggest musical axis of France” for the 40th anniversary of this annual festival.

Elected last March as French Capital of Culture for 2022, the city of Villeurbanne (Rhône) intends to keep its popular side. In a city where nearly 50% of the inhabitants are under 30 years old, its cultural programming launches "a third way, between condescending cultural elitism and demagoguery which levels down", according to the mayor (PS) of the city , Cédric Van Styvendael.

After its official inauguration on January 7, Villeurbanne 2022 will have a total of 700 events, including 200 concerts, 300 shows and 30 festivals giving pride of place to young people.

Starting with a “Youth Festival”, which will take place from June 3 to 5, designed and produced by around 100 volunteers aged 12 to 25, in the Feyssine natural park.

They will be accompanied by professionals, in the hope of forging lasting relationships with them.

Bringing amateurs and professionals together in the street

Fans will also be on hand for the Fête de la Musique, on June 21, which will turn into “the largest musical axis in France” for the 40th anniversary of this annual festival. Amateur and professional musicians will be invited to come and play along a 6.5-kilometer interrupted avenue linking Villeurbanne to the Hôtel de Ville de Lyon. A way of reconciling the metropolis and the city of Villeurbanne, long shunned during Gérard Collomb's tenure.

Finally, the street theater company Royal de Luxe will offer a creation from September 23 to 25, 2022, which will stroll throughout the city along with 22 heritage trails.

They thus want to unite Villeurbanne and their neighbors of the metropolis around a “common history”, but also to strengthen the cultural education of its inhabitants, an axis at the heart of the mandate of Cédric Van Styvendael.
