The department of Gironde, led by the left, decided on Monday not to finance the GPSO (Grand Projet du Sud-Ouest) but to instead contribute to improving the local rail network.

The GPSO provides for the creation of two new high-speed lines between Bordeaux and Toulouse and between Bordeaux and Dax, as an extension of the existing LGV between Paris and Bordeaux.

The departmental council, to which a commitment of 281 million euros was requested for the LGV, adopted by a large majority a deliberation on the creation of a "fund for the development of local rail lines" of 170 million euros. 'euros in order to “stimulate the start-up” of a “metropolitan” or “Girondin” RER with Bordeaux metropolis.

"The department wishes to focus its effort only on daily transport," explained in plenary session Jean-Luc Gleyze, its president PS.

He specified that the department would not join the local public establishment to be set up in 2022 to finance the GPSO and would also ensure that its money is not used by Bordeaux Métropole to finance the railway improvements of the south of Bordeaux (AFSB), a component of the LGV project.

Difficulties in completing financing in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The GPSO project was relaunched last April by Prime Minister Jean Castex, who announced the release of 4.1 billion euros from the State to finance the Bordeaux-Toulouse part.

Worth 14.3 billion euros, the project must be supported at 40% by the State, 40% by the local authorities of the New Aquitaine and Occitanie regions, and 20% by the European Union. .

Occitanie has completed its funding (16 contributing communities) but difficulties exist in New Aquitaine where some of the eleven communities approached, such as Lot-et-Garonne, refuse to finance the project.

The question also tears up the left-wing majority in Bordeaux metropolis, where PS President Alain Anziani wants to allocate 354 million euros to the GPSO, when his ally EELV Pierre Hurmic, mayor of Bordeaux, demands that this sum only contribute to the improvement of “daily trains” around the metropolis.
