Frustration, injustice and anger ... Material insecurity has "a strong psychological and symbolic impact" in the lives of those concerned, according to an Ifop survey published on Monday.

This study, conducted for the Jean-Jaurès Foundation and the Agence du Don en kind, shows that the financial situation has deteriorated "since the start of the coronavirus crisis" for more than a third of French people (36%) .

Deprivations

According to this online survey conducted from September 28 to October 6 with a representative sample of 2,000 people aged 18 and over, "the inability to access certain products leads to other deprivations according to a logic of renunciation".

Nearly one in three French people (31%) have to give up very regularly (more than four times a month) the purchase of essential non-food products.

This phenomenon affects young people (39% are under 35), precarious workers (51% of autoentrepreneurs, 49% of temporary workers), households with the lowest incomes (around 1,300 euros).

Frustration

For the Jean-Jaurès Foundation, “material precariousness cannot be reduced to the sole idea of 'lack'.

It has more serious consequences ”with in particular a“ strong psychological and symbolic impact ”.

It generates frustration for 56% of those questioned, a feeling of injustice (41%) but also anger for 28%.

The study raises the question of the political translation of these feelings, which turn out to be all the more marked as we feel close to the protest movement of the yellow vests (GJ), born in the fall of 2018. Frustration reached 59% among GJs, injustice 61% and anger 44%.
