• Album 'House of Gucci' travels to New York with an always striking Lady Gaga

  • Interview Lady Gaga: "I had ruined my life, I had become Lady Gaga, my worst enemy"

"Have you ever been told that you look a lot like Elizabeth Taylor?

" "Oh, I assure you that I am much better." The first time Maurizio Gucci and Patrizia Reggiani saw each other, sparks flew. It was at a social gathering of the puppies of the

Milanese

jet set

, one night in November 1970: he was 22 years old; she, 21 and wearing a red dress that deeply shocked Maurizio, to the point that from then on, he began to call Patrizia "

il mio prospectus rosso

", my red elf. She called him

Mau

. On the second date and despite fierce opposition from the Gucci, he asked her to marry him.

The story of luxury, desire and ambition that ended in tragedy starring both has so many juicy anecdotes and script twists that all the anticipation before the premiere of

Gucci House

is justified. As

Sara Gay Forden

explains

in the book on which

Ridley Scott's

film is based

,

their romance began as

a forbidden story,

worthy of Capulets and Montescos.

Despite being destined to inherit Gucci, Maurizio was a shy and inexperienced young man when he met Patrizia, a boy who had grown up

overprotected by his father after the death of his mother at the age of five

. Rodolfo Gucci had other plans for him, but he did not count on the appearance on the scene of

Patrizia Reggiani, a force of nature with violet eyes, extroverted, excessive

in every way, the result of an extramarital affair between a wealthy transport businessman and the waitress from a restaurant in Modena where he would stop to eat.

Patrizia grew up with a mother who projected

tons of ambition

on her

, and that was the engine of almost everything she did in her life, including the commission to murder her husband.

His inordinate love of luxury is summed up in this phrase he said in a television interview:

"I'd rather cry in a Rolls-Royce than be happy on a bicycle."

Maurizio and Patrizia were married in October 1972, but among the 500 guests at the wedding there was not a single relative of the groom. His father, Rodolfo, had tried by all means to

prevent the marriage

(he even asked the Archbishop of Milan). After years without speaking, the family reconciliation came when

Maurizio was assigned to New York to assume the reins of the business in the United States

, where Gucci's popularity among bankers and Hollywood actors began to grow like foam. The couple's first daughter, Alessandra, was born in 1976 and the second, Allegra, in 1981. Things began to go wrong at

Christmas 1985, the first that Maurizio did not spend at home.

All divorces are bitter, but that of Maurizio and Patrizia was also fraught with fierce family battles for control of the brand and constant problems with the courts for

tax evasion

. After the split, Maurizio had a brief

affair

with model Sheree McLaughlin, a Farrah Fawcett blonde from Tampa, Florida, who in many ways was

Patrizia's nemesis.

But things got really serious when he began a relationship with

Paola Franchi, an old friendship from his youth, divorced from a copper magnate

, with whom he met again at a private party in Saint Moritz. They were about to get married when Patrizia hatched her plan.

The commissioner who arrested Patrizia in the early morning of January 31, 1997 tells in Gay Forden's book that he met a cold and impassive woman, "who

still thought that money can buy everything

."

Two years after the murder of Maurizio and Patrizia, she lived like a queen in a

Milanese

palazzo

with

her daughters, two maids, a cocker spaniel, a starling, two ducks, two turtles and a cat.

She went to the police station in a blue evening dress, a mink coat, diamond bracelets, gold earrings, and huge sunglasses.

From Gucci, of course.
