In Martinique, blockades paralyzed a good part of the economic activity on Monday, and demonstrators marched in the streets of Fort de France, with an incursion into the arrival village of the transat Jacques Vabre.

The demonstration, at the call of trade union organizations protesting in particular against the compulsory vaccination of caregivers, brought together up to 1,300 people in front of the prefecture, according to the police.

The movement then became thinner as the unions waited for a meeting with the prefect.

The rest of the procession then went to the village of the Jacques Vabre transatlantic race, a famous sailing race whose skippers arrive from Tuesday in Martinique.

Particularly disrupted public transport

Banners and flags were torn from the site on the city's waterfront. The installation of the arrival village of the Jacques Vabre transatlantic in Fort-de-France is the subject of criticism from anti-colonialist movements. At the beginning of November, the administrative court of Fort-de-France rejected a request from the international movement for reparations (MIR) asking for the closure of the borders of Martinique and the cancellation of the transatlantic race Jacques Vabre.

In addition to the blocking of the port, the island's refinery and the commercial areas of the agglomeration of Fort-de-France, disruptions in the reception of students have been observed in several municipalities on the island.

Public transport in the agglomeration community in the center of the island is partially disrupted due to the various roadblocks, the center transport authority warned.

At war with the dear life

These blockages are part of the call for a general strike launched by 17 trade unions with various demands, including the end of the vaccination obligation and suspensions for caregivers, but also the increase in wages and salaries. social minima and lower fuel and gas prices. "I condemn the violence, but there is an extremely eruptive situation in our countries at the moment", declared the PS senator of Martinique Catherine Conconne, who defended Monday afternoon an amendment to the draft budget for 2022, pleading for the temporary application of a reduced VAT rate on freight bound for Martinique, Guadeloupe and Reunion.

“The cost of living is the most complicated element to manage and the strongest element of recrimination of our populations,” she underlined.

The unions are also asking for the full support of tests for chlordeconemia, a disease linked to chlordecone, this pesticide widely used in banana fields between 1972 and 1993, and suspected of being responsible for many diseases such as prostate cancer.
