This is a new record for the auctions of Hospices de Beaune wines.

The "President's coin", also called "Coin of Charity" and intended each year to support a great cause, this year reached 800,000 euros and 11.7 million euros (excluding costs) were collected for hospital works, according to figures communicated by Sotheby's overnight from Sunday to Monday.

"The average price increase per vintage was 85%, compared to last year, the white wine cuvées increased by 115% and those of red wines by 56%", according to the auction house.

The highlight was a barrel of Corton Renardes Grand Cru.

It was therefore awarded at 800,000 euros (excluding costs), against 660,000 euros last year.

Burgundy wines are exported

This annual charity sale, the oldest and most famous in the world, serves as an international barometer for the prices of Burgundy wines, which have been rising steadily in recent years, due in particular to its export success.

The benefit of the “president's coin” is intended this year for “Solidarité Femmes”, an associative network to help victims of domestic violence, and to the Institut Curie, for research against breast cancer.

The rest of the sale traditionally goes to maintaining the heritage and modernizing the hospital equipment of this institution in the heart of Burgundy.

Production weighed down by the weather this year

The 2021 vintage was complicated by the vagaries of the weather, with an expected volume of 900,000 to 950,000 hectoliters, against 1.56 million in 2020, according to the Interprofessional Bureau of Burgundy Wines (BIVB).

Also, this year, only 349 "pieces" (228-liter barrels corresponding to 288 bottles) and five "feuillettes" (half-barrels) of red and white futures were offered to buyers compared to 630 barrels last year.

Six pieces of marc de Bourgogne and one of fine were also sold.

“The sale of these 362 lots reached an average price per lot of 34,980 euros.

In 2020, 638 lots were sold for an average amount of 21,690 euros ”, details Sotheby's.

The American house has resumed this year the auctions held since 2005 by its British competitor Christie's.

Its objective: to develop its wine market in France.
