The current progression of the 5th wave of Covid-19 is "dazzling", alerted this Sunday Gabriel Attal, the government spokesman, however weighing "elements that can worry us and elements that can make us confident ".

"This 5th wave, it starts in a dazzling way", noted the Secretary of State, guest on Europe 1, CNEWS and Les Echos.

On average calculated over 7 days (which gives a more faithful view), the number of daily cases has almost doubled in one week: it was 17,153 on Saturday, against 9,458 the previous Saturday.

This represents an increase of 81%.

And this increase is exponential, a sign that the epidemic is going quickly: before that, it had taken three weeks for the number of daily cases to increase in the same proportions.

Will the vaccination be enough?

But as in previous waves, the issue is whether this surge in infections will lead to a massive influx to the hospital. For now, this is not the case, which the authorities attribute to vaccination, which remains very effective in preventing serious forms of the disease (even if it is less so against contamination with the Delta variant). On Saturday, 7,974 Covid patients were hospitalized in France, including 1,333 in critical care services (the most serious cases), against 6,500 and 1,000 respectively a month earlier.

"We see that there is a very strong increase in contamination, but we also know that in France, we have a very wide vaccination coverage (and) we are rather ahead of our neighbors on the vaccination booster" , underlined Sunday Gabriel Attal, praising the installation in July of the sanitary pass, whereas "most of the countries which surround us set up it afterwards".

National Rally tackle

Asked about the effectiveness of the pass, he put forward an increase of "102%" of checks in recent days compared to the previous week, or "on the first four days of this week, 70,000 checks of people and more than 4,300 inspections of establishments open to the public ”.

With the health pass, the government assumes, he insisted, "this choice of placing constraints on unvaccinated people rather than on vaccinated people."

Asked about BFM-TV, RN president Jordan Bardella said he did not see “a clear government strategy”.

"I have the feeling that we are playing on our fears," added the MEP while agreeing to an obvious resurgence of cases.
