The health situation in Reunion is deteriorating rapidly.

“The incidence rate is progressing very significantly.

On the date (Tuesday), we were already at 194 incidence.

We are therefore approaching the bar of 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, so it is very worrying, ”said Ottman Zaïr, chief of staff to Prefect Jacques Billanta.

In one week, the incidence rate has almost doubled, reports Réunion La 1ère.

In order to fight against the spread of Covid-19, Ottman Zaïr calls on residents to limit their travel, more particularly to neighboring countries, as the end of year holidays approach.

"It may be necessary to limit travel and to ensure compliance with barrier measures in Reunion so that the situation is under control and that we all have a good vacation," he said.

Respect barrier gestures and wearing a mask

For the moment, a potential curfew or a reconfinement have not been mentioned. Ottman Zaïr assured that "proportionate" measures would be decided and that the most important at the moment was to respect barrier gestures and the wearing of a mask. "This is the best way to stop the spread of the virus with vaccination," said Ottman Zaïr. However, the health situation could push the authorities to take new, more restrictive measures if necessary.

Regarding travel, the chief of staff of the prefect of Reunion mentioned the case of Mauritius, a privileged vacation spot for Reunion Islanders.

For the moment, the territory is classified in orange by the French authorities.

"In the event of classification in the red zone, other additional measures will be put in place to ensure that travel from Mauritius to Reunion is strictly limited," he explained.
