Unknown perpetrators have carried out an arson attack on the Iranian consulate in Hamburg.

On Friday evening they hurled an incendiary device against a steel door that leads to the premises of the consulate in the Winterhude district, the police said.

Property damage occurred at the entrance to the consulate, no one was injured.

The police were initially unable to provide any information on the motive for the crime.

Since a political background cannot be ruled out, the state security has taken over the investigation.

The newspapers Bild and the Hamburger Abendblatt had previously reported.

The police were reportedly informed of the crime by a witness around 8:40 p.m.

This witness saw how probably two men had quickly left the scene.

During the search, which was initiated immediately, two men were initially found nearby, but according to current knowledge they had nothing to do with the crime, the police said.
