Begun just two months ago, on September 19, the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano continues to ravage the island of La Palma in the Spanish Canary Islands archipelago.

The lava flows have already destroyed 1,018 hectares and washed away several thousand buildings, including houses, and wiped out many cultures.

On November 13, a man was found dead.

The first death since the start of the events.

The island, partly covered with ash, has already gained about forty hectares on the water.

  • Begun on September 19, the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canaries is still continuing.

  • This eruption is the third in a century, after that of the San Juan volcano in 1949 and that of Teneguia in 1971.

  • Several hundred of the 85,000 inhabitants of the island have been evacuated and relocated since the start of the events.

  • The lava flows from the Cumbre Vieja volcano have already devastated 1,018 hectares and washed away several thousand buildings.

  • The ash spat out by the volcano has created an apocalyptic landscape of black color.

  • Only a few elements of nature still stand out.

  • The ashes covered the abandoned dwellings.

  • Replacing the scenes of life ...

  • It is the longest eruption observed on La Palma for 343 years.

  • The landscape near the volcano has become almost lunar.

  • A man was found dead Saturday, November 13 in the security perimeter put in place.

  • The eruption, which has been going on for nearly two months, had so far not claimed any lives, but the lava flows and gas emissions had forced the authorities to close part of the island's territory.

  • In addition to buildings and houses, the lava flow destroyed many crops, including banana plantations.

  • On the passage of the lava, the resumption of agriculture will have to wait years.

Time for nature to regain its rights.

  • The island has already gained from the water a peninsula of about forty hectares.
