An innovative non-invasive treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi said that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can be treated with an innovative, non-surgical procedure called Transoral Fundoplication, Non-Incisional.

Sour taste in the mouth

The hospital explained that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux is a condition in which the contents of the stomach, which contain acids, regularly rush into the esophagus, causing a person unpleasant symptoms. This condition results from the weakness of the valve between the stomach and the esophagus, which prevents it from closing properly, and this can lead to a range of symptoms, which range from a sour taste in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, vomiting and severe chest pain.

Dr. John Rodriguez, chief of general surgery in the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said: “We can all experience GERD on and off several times in our lives, but in a different group of people this can happen. Symptoms are repeated for a longer period of time, causing severe discomfort and discomfort, which negatively affects a person's quality of life.

In many cases, symptoms can be controlled to some extent by paying more attention to our diet, but many have to take certain medications and make lifestyle adjustments;

Because the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease can be very unpleasant and greatly affect their lives.”

Medicines and surgery

Chronic cases of GERD can often be managed and symptoms reduced by prescribing medication for the disease.

However, for many patients, who are concerned about side effects or are reluctant to rely on daily medications, surgery was previously their only second option.

Oral fundoplication

Transoral fundoplication without an incision (TIF) is a paradigm shift for patients, who now have the option of choosing a third approach to reduce their symptoms.

The process of “transoral fundoplication without a surgical incision” depends on doctors accessing the valve between the stomach and esophagus through the mouth, and using a specialized device to restore and activate the valve’s functions by creating a ring of tissue around the valve and fixing it in place using small and very strong fixation tools .

This procedure does not require any surgical incisions;

Since the operation to access the valve is done through the mouth, the patient does not need to stay in the hospital after the operation.

Numerous studies have shown that the effectiveness of the new procedure is no less than that of more invasive procedures.

Dr. Rodriguez added, “This non-surgical procedure is an ideal option for patients who do not wish to take medication or undergo surgery.

The new procedure provides them with an effective and minimally invasive way to reduce acid reflux symptoms just as surgery does, but without the complications, which can accompany surgeries or delay recovery.

For the vast majority of patients, the new procedure helps them reduce dependence on medications and lead a lifestyle free of the unpleasant symptoms they have had for a long time.”
