The rainbow series goes XXL mode! The

Les Engagés

series

is back this Friday evening on France tv.slash *. This third and final season, mysteriously subtitled "XAOC", consists of three episodes of 45 minutes, against ten minutes previously. A change of format that allows Hicham, Thibault and all the members of Point G, the LGBT center in Lyon where the series takes place, to experience adventures that take on a whole new dimension. Explanations.

Les Engiés

, often described as the first French series to assert its LGBT identity, was originally broadcast on the Studio 4 platform as a short program.

“When we finished season 2, the platform closed.

In the meantime, the France Télévisions group had created France.tv Slash.

France.tv Slash was not necessarily interested in short formats and this prompted us to change the duration of the series ”, explains Sullivan Le Postec, the creator of the series, whom

20 Minutes

met during the last edition of the Series Mania festival in Lille.

"A denser, more complex narration"

This change of format is an opportunity to reinvent the show a little.

"With 45-minute episodes, we can offer a more dense, more complex narrative," rejoices the screenwriter, who also - for the first time - co-directed with William Samaha.

In this new season, Hicham (Mehdi Meskar), Thibaut (Éric Pucheu) and members of the LGBT center accompany Anzor (Ishtvan Nekrasov), a Chechen gay refugee.

When the latter is the victim of an attempted murder, Hicham and Thibaut embark on an investigation.

The trail leads Thibaut to the European Parliament's Human Rights Committee.

Over the first two seasons, Hicham brought Thibault to face his demons and the breakup he had just experienced.

“This character has slowly rebuilt.

The question he is going to ask himself is: “am I enough to face the outside world and get out of my bubble?”

Thibault was extremely alone when we met him in season 1, he made real friendships with Hicham and the other members of the association.

It appeased him and he is able to face these new fights, ”comments Sullivan Le Postec.

"We are talking about the State's response to this police violence"

For his part, Hicham is confronted with the death of his cousin, Marwen, who died after a violent police arrest. This death brings him back to the city he fled in season 1. “Hicham is brought back to the starting point. In the first episode, he had run away from home. There, armed with everything he has learned, with the new man he has become, with the militant experience he has acquired, he will put this at the service of where he grew up and come to terms with it. this part of himself and his past, ”says the screenwriter.

Sullivan Le Postec had the idea of an intrigue around police violence from the shooting of season 2. “More than police violence, we are talking about the state's response to this police violence and the policy of lies, that we found in 2005 at Adama Traoré, which consists of trying to invent smoke screens so as not to admit that a mistake was made. Which is almost more serious and damaging and which fractures society even more than police violence itself, ”said the screenwriter.

Homophobia in Chechnya, fake news, hacking at the "Pegasus Project",

The Engaged

fully embrace the news.

Intrigues and mysteries visually accompanied by a very contrasting play of light.

“We worked a lot on lighting with our director of photography to create this thriller atmosphere.

Whether in the LGBT center, in Brussels or in Lyon, places that would normally be very bright, there is always a part of darkness and mystery, ”relates William Samaha, who co-directs the episodes.

These three episodes offer an end as thrilling as it is moving to the adventures of Hicham, Thibault, Claude (Denis D'Arcangelo), Nadjet (Nanou Harry) and Amaury (Franck Fargier).

“I wrote this season as a conclusion.

I'm happy with where I left them, ”concludes Sullivan Le Postec.
