The scientific community is concerned about the impact of rising sea levels on Venice (Italy).
The foundations of the buildings of the City of the Doges are eaten away by this phenomenon and more and more buildings are collapsing.
Faced with this situation, the Venetian Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts addressed a letter to Mario Draghi, President of the Council of Ministers in Italy.
The art historian Salvatore Settis unveiled the contents of this letter in an article in the daily
La Stampa
relayed by
Les Echos
.
"Venice will not disappear like Atlantis engulfed by the waves, but will collapse on itself", it is written in the document "Already, for decades, brackish water has eaten away the foundations of buildings which s 'collapse more and more often,' the historian also explained.
"Saving Venice will restore credibility to Italy"
For a century, sea levels have risen by 35 centimeters and forecasts for the future are far from optimistic.
The level of the Adriatic could have increased from 44 to 76 centimeters by 2100. Faced with this problem, the giant Mose dike, whose mission is to protect Venice, will not be enough.
Thus, the Venetian Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts proposes to set up a single organization for the protection of Venice, against the current thirty, which makes coordination delicate.
“Saving Venice will restore credibility to Italy.
It will set an example for the whole world by proving that no further delay is allowed to take concrete action, ”concluded Salvatore Settis.
