Indian police are investigating the case of 400 men who assaulted a homeless 16-year-old girl!

Authorities in India have arrested at least 7 men in the west of the country after a 16-year-old girl alleged that she was raped hundreds of times by hundreds of men, in the most tragic "rape" case in history.

According to CNN, a statement issued by the Indian Child Welfare Commission indicated that about 400 men had raped the homeless girl who lives in Bid, Maharashtra.

According to the head of the Child Welfare Centre, Abhay Vitalrao Phanayev, the girl named two police officers in her complaint.

Fanaev pointed out that the girl was begging for money at a bus stop when, according to the girl's allegations, three men forced her into prostitution.

The chairperson added that while it is difficult to confirm the number of alleged rapists, the girl was able to identify at least 25 alleged perpetrators, and the girl tried to file a police complaint against a man she accused of beating her, but the officers did not register her.

Police said in a statement on Monday that they had registered cases against eight males, including a minor, related to rape and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, which provides for harsher penalties for longer prison terms.

They also registered a case under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act.

The girl told police that at the age of 13 she married a 33-year-old man who sexually assaulted her, according to a police statement, the network reported.

She also told the police that she was sexually assaulted by her father which eventually led her to leave the house and sleep at the bus station.

Women's rights activist Yogita Bhyana said this was "the most tragic (rape) case in history...this girl was being tortured every day", adding that the police had failed to protect her.

"We want to take strict action against all the perpetrators."

According to India's National Crime Records Bureau, more than 28,000 rapes were reported in 2020, averaging one assault every 18 minutes, but some experts believe the true number is much higher, as many are not reported. Cases due to fear of scandal or retaliation.
