Spanish researchers demonstrate how trained innate immunity protects against SARS-CoV-2 and enhances vaccines

An immunotherapy based on the

intranasal administration of a preparation of killed bacteria

(called MV130) is highly effective in preventing mortality caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and in enhancing the effect of vaccines against covid-19.

It has been verified -for the moment in animals- by a team of Spanish scientists, who have shown with these results that

the efficacy and immune response of vaccines

can be

improved

, particularly in some segments of the population and also against variants of the pathogen that can reduce the effectiveness of these vaccines, and thus contribute to better protection of the population against covid-19.

The results of the research - which are published today in the journal

Frontiers in Immunology

- have yielded overwhelming scientific evidence: the mortality of infected mice was significantly lower when they received this immunotherapy (MV130) before infection.

The arrival of vaccines has been the best weapon against the pandemic, the CNIC and the CSIC have stressed in a note released today, but they have confirmed the need for effective and fast tools to respond to the appearance of new viruses, something that it can be achieved by training the immune response.

Concern in Europe about contagions grows and measures are already planned

Europe accounts for an incessant increase in coronavirus infections: several countries record highs, France fears reaching a thousand hospitalizations in the month of January and Belgium is considering returning to teleworking.

In the last week, Europe reported a 5% increase in deaths from covid-19, while in the rest of the continents the number of deaths remained stable or decreased, according to the latest epidemiological report from the World Health Organization (WHO) .

The Swedish Government announced today that as of December 1 it will introduce the so-called covid-passport for public meetings and events of more than one hundred people indoors with the aim of avoiding an increase in the contagion of the coronavirus.

While in Italy 10,172 new coronavirus infections were confirmed this Wednesday in the last twenty-four hours, exceeding the threshold of ten thousand for the first time since last May, according to data published by the Ministry of Health.

With the new data on infections, which was not seen since 10,176 on May 8 and confirmed with half a million tests, there are 4,883,242 people who have contracted Sars-CoV-2 in Italy since the pandemic broke out. , in February 2020.
