• The profession of family mediator is still little known in France, and tends to develop.

  • Family mediators intervene to try to re-establish links between people who can no longer communicate.

  • The conflicts that arise in connection with a separation represent the majority of cases.

Family mediators are still unknown in France. However, in times of health crisis, their role is invaluable in the face of the possible increase in conflict situations within a family. Separation, child custody, intergenerational conflict, inheritance ... There are many situations of disagreement, and sometimes lead to a breakdown in communication between the parties. This is when the mediator comes in. “It's a third party that welcomes people in conflict. It helps them ease tensions, ”explains Edwige Lagniaux, currently in training at the Cnam des Pays-de-la-Loire (National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts) to become a family mediator.

In a post-Covid world, this educator of young children wanted to broaden her knowledge of the family circle. It must be said that the family mediator is like a jack of all trades. Sociology, law, psychology: the theoretical background is solid to exercise this profession, accessible after obtaining a State diploma, which has only existed since 2004. A still recent training, for a profession which is only making progress in France. “It's very common in North America. Today, we feel that there is a need. People also go through family mediation to avoid the legal stage, ”says Edwige. "In 90% of cases, these are situations of separation, and the conflicts that go with it", adds Christine Vallée, family mediator in association, in Loire-Atlantique. “Even for a couple separated for ten years,This does not mean that the tensions no longer exist ”. “It is also necessary to be able to call on the family mediator before the conflict. To clarify things, ”says Kévin Julien, family mediator in Nantes for five years.

"Ensure that a link can be recreated"

Especially in times of health crisis, with the various restrictions that have led to complex situations within the family circle.

To resolve these conflicts, within the couple, between parents and child or between generations, the family mediator intervenes at the request of one of the persons concerned.

After a first interview with her, he meets the other party, before trying to resolve the conflict with the two.

“These particular situations such as confinement have put their finger on tensions.

Returning to the history of the conflict, we come back to the issue of the health crisis, which may have led to imbalances in the couple, ”Christine Vallée analyzes.

“Even in conflict, people managed to find solutions during this period,” says Kévin Julien.

Close to the role of a psychologist, the mediator has other strings to his bow, especially around notions of law. “He is there to ensure that a link can be recreated between people who can no longer communicate. But he does not decide, ”explains Edwige. While mediation can have therapeutic effects, it is not there to cure. As for the question of law, it is a “support for understanding” in mediation. “For a case of separation, we have basic knowledge that makes it possible to clarify certain points with people, in particular concerning parental authority. Family mediation and justice are not mutually exclusive. But that does not mean that they are stuck ”, indicates Christine Vallée, referring to the Mandatory Prior Family Mediation Attempt (TMFPO),tested since 2017 by the Ministry of Justice, in 11 courts in France. An experiment which marks the will of the public authorities to appeal to family mediation.

In 2016, CAF identified 366 full-time equivalents of family mediators within the approved associations.

In association, going through a family mediator costs between 2 euros and 131 euros, depending on your monthly income.

A session costs around 50 euros at a liberal.
