For the NGO France Nature Environnement, this is no less than a “new victory”.

The Council of State has ordered the government to reduce the use of pesticides in Natura 2000 sites, dedicated to the protection of biodiversity, according to a decision issued on Monday.

"The ministers of ecological transition, solidarity and health, agriculture and food, and economy and finance are called upon to take the regulatory implementing measures (...) in a six months from the notification of this decision ”, specifies the judgment.

The EU imposes fewer synthetic pesticides

A European directive requires Member States to prohibit or restrict the use of synthetic pesticides in Natura 2000 sites. But France Nature Environnement, federation of associations for the protection of nature and the environment, affirms that this directive does not is not "implementation on the ground". The decision of the Council of State therefore aims to "put an end to more than 10 years of culpable inaction by successive governments too attentive to the lobbies of chemical agriculture or majority unions", denounces Antoine Gatet, vice-president. president of the NGO.

The network of Natura 2000 sites has existed for almost 30 years in France and covers 12.9% of France's territory, 15% of which is agricultural.

The objective of this network is to preserve endangered or characteristic species and environments at European level, while taking into account human activities.
