Do good - and make a drink out of it!

The two brothers Jan and Nico Gutermuth from the eastern Hessian town of Hosenfeld do just that: In autumn 2020 they founded their company Brothers Distillery - and knew straight away that they wanted to combine the distribution of their own gin with a social project.

“We just wanted to give something back,” says Nico Gutermuth.

And who or what do they give? The trees in the forest. They both travel a lot in the forest, says Nico Gutermuth, especially his brother Jan often roams the Hessian forest. "He's a hunter." And what could be better than the self-developed gin that the two have been selling for over a year? For every bottle of gin that the Gutermuths sell, part of the money is donated to the reforestation of the Hessian forest - "A person in Germany has to plant eleven trees a year in order to be climate-neutral," says Nico Gutermuth. This information comes from the Hessian Forestry Office.

What began as a hobby quickly turned into a passion, and finally into a business: At home in the kitchen, at their own table still, the Gutermuths tried 60 firing attempts for 1038 days.

Until the first “batch”, the first load of flammable gin, was ready.

"Our gin is really Hessian"

The gin is distilled from ingredients that have been organically grown.

The brothers insist on their own concept of sustainability.

“We also want to encourage our customers to do upcycling.” In other words, to make something new out of the gin container, a beautiful pharmacist bottle, for example a lamp, a flower vase or a soap dispenser.

The brothers have chosen a family business for the distillery: the Burkhard distillery in Oberursel.

“Our gin is really Hessian,” says Nico Gutermuth.

The distillery has been run since 1881, now in the fifth generation.

184 trees have since been planted because the brothers Nico and Jan Gutermuth sold their gin and donated part of the proceeds.

184 tons of CO2 are saved in the average lifespan of these trees.

For the project, the brothers are working together with the Hessian Forestry Office, which plants the donated trees where they are needed.

So you can't visit your own gin tree.

As soon as Corona allows it again, they also want to plant the trees personally, they say, this is currently not allowed.

The Gutermuths are currently developing their second gin.

One thing is certain: they also want to continue to help reforest the Hessian forest with him - “our forests have had some bad years of drought and drought”.

Until then, you can pass the time with your first gin, a bottle costs 34.90 euros - forest reforestation included.
