“For me, the bastard is the father who lied to me.

The novel 

by Sorj Chalandon, which was in the running for the 2021 Goncourt prize, is the testimony of a child to whom his father lied all his life.

The author and journalist relates with emotion: “He lied about what he had done during the war, but also about everything he had done during his life.

The bastard, that's it.

It was the father who left me in the dark.

"Lies which led Sorj Chalandon to become a journalist:" To write is to restore truths.

For me, writing is that, and it is above all to give the truth as an inheritance to my children.

This testimony of his painful past is for the author a way of living with his wounds: “I want to live with it!

It's strange, but I live with open wounds!

Because if I close my wounds, that means I forget everything, and I don't want to.
