Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer fears more deaths from the current worsening of the corona pandemic than in the previous waves.

"We are only at the beginning of a harsh winter: the wave that we have in front of us will overshadow all previous waves," said the CDU politician of the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

“This fourth wave will demand more victims, including more fatalities, than anything we have known before.” At the same time, Kretschmer prepared people for the fact that the tense situation would continue for months.

“We know from last year that we have to hold out until Easter.

This wave will not be over before then. "

2-G rule required for all of Germany

Germany still has the chance to prevent a lockdown during the Christmas season, stressed the head of government.

"But we are running out of time." He called for a 2-G rule throughout Germany to avoid infection from unvaccinated people.

Contacts would also have to be reduced and as many larger events as possible, such as Christmas markets across the country, canceled.

Kretschmer went into court with the traffic light parties SPD, Greens and FDP in Berlin.

“The traffic light's corona policy is extremely dangerous.

The decision-making speed of the new coalition in Berlin is too slow.

While the traffic light politicians in Berlin are talking about the fact that there is no pandemic situation, the number of infections is exploding across the country.

This policy must be borne out by the employees in the hospitals. "

The federal and state governments want to talk about the corona situation again next Thursday.

From Kretschmer's point of view, the meeting comes too late.

“The federal and state governments worked together to fight this pandemic for 18 months.

Now the traffic light wants to pass its law first and then speak to the prime minister.

That's bad style. "

The Marburger Bund doctors' association is also concerned about the rapid spread of the corona virus. "I have never been so worried in the pandemic as I am now," said the chairwoman of the association, Susanne Johna, in the newspapers of the Funke media group on Sunday. The number of corona patients in the intensive care units will increase so much in the coming weeks that in some places a supra-regional, perhaps even Germany-wide transfer will be necessary. And in politics there is “a power vacuum between the old and future government, federal and state governments,” Johna complained.

Bremen's mayor Andreas Bovenschulte warned in an interview with the editorial network Germany: “The public must not give the impression that the federal and state governments are unable to take joint action in difficult times.” The SPD politician called for nationwide measures.

"These include, for example, test obligations at the workplace, the application of the 2-G rules and possibly also mandatory vaccinations for certain professional groups."

At the same time, he is relying on a "complementary hotspot strategy".

"It cannot be right that the same restrictions apply in counties with an incidence of less than 100 as in those with an incidence of over 1000," emphasized Bovenschulte.
