Coronavirus Covid affects men more and with worse consequences: science explains why
Study after study, researchers are trying to understand how the work
vaccines
against
Covid
, how long immunity and also when and how to receive the third dose.
The latest research was carried out by the Ieo, the European Institute of Oncology.
A premise: the study involved 2,000 people from the institute, including medical, health, administrative and research personnel, "monitored" since the beginning of the
pandemic
, first by means of swabs, then, after vaccinations, by dosing anti-
Sars
antibodies.
CoV2
in the blood.
Here are the results, in three points, as told by
Pier Giuseppe Pelicci
, director of research at Ieo and coordinator of the study currently published on the medRxiv platform, that is, before the actual review and publication in scientific journals.
"The first point is that
vaccines work very well,
" says Pelicci. "This is not new, but here we have the demonstration in a so-called longitudinal study, which has followed a group of people, homogeneous for exposure to the risk of contagion, over time."
Supporting data are as follows: the percentage of subjects (out of 2,000) who were infected prior to
vaccination
was 18%. After
vaccination
, it dropped to 1.5%. "The second point is that when a vaccinated person gets sick (it can happen in some cases)
the disease is milder
and probably less contagious than in the unimmunized," continues Pelicci. The duration of positive swabs, then in unvaccinated patients, is approximately 16 days, in vaccinated it is two.
But the most interesting result refers to the
antibodies
that the immune system produces to defend itself against the
coronavirus
. And this is an issue that raises a number of questions. It measures or not the
anti-Sar CoV2 antibodies
in the blood to see if you are protected from infection and possibly decide whether or not to take
the third dose
.
This is what the study says: "The preliminary question, to answer, was: did I have the disease or did I receive the vaccine, to what extent has my body made antibodies capable of neutralizing the virus? Our data shows that
the production of antibodies is much stronger after the vaccine
(in more than 98% of people), nothing to do with the result of a much weaker infection, "says Pelicci.
And now we come to the bad news:
antibodies, in any case, decrease over time
and, in any case, their production (after illness or vaccine) is reduced in the elderly or frail. And the question arises again:
does it make sense to use antibody tests?
"The message of our research is this: it makes sense to assess the antibody response in a certain population, for example
the elderly
. And the results can guide health policies, that is, the choice of the moment for the third dose, for example. But it is unthinkable to subject the entire population to these tests and decide on a case-by-case basis what to do. "
"I hope that the results of this study can dispel the doubts of those who still do not believe in the proper functioning of
vaccines
and that serological tests are used as part of selective vaccination campaigns", comments Giuseppe Caprotti, president of the Guido Foundation Venosta.
.
"The spirit that animated the program is based on
the importance of scientific research
whose purpose is to improve the living conditions of man."
