The executive chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) urges swift action in the fight against the dramatically increasing number of corona infections.

The virus does not ask for political attitudes or for transitional governments, said Merkel on Wednesday after information from the German press agency from circles of participants at the meeting of the Union parliamentary group in Berlin.

“We have to act,” she added.

The Chancellor once again called for the federal and state governments to meet in the fight against Corona.

Merkel was optimistic that such a conference of prime ministers would also take place. She was quoted as saying: "The faster, the better." The appointment coordination is ongoing. After this information, the Chancellor demanded that there must be solidarity between the federal states when it comes to transporting intensive care patients to other federal states.

Merkel complained that the speed of the booster vaccinations was not sufficient.

So far, 3 million people have received such a booster vaccination, according to the age recommendation, 24 to 25 million should receive such a booster.

"We have to get faster," the Chancellor was quoted as saying.

It had to be discussed how the pace could be increased.

Merkel warned that it would be bad if the health system were overloaded in the fourth wave.

Berlin decides to expand the 2-G rule

The Berlin Senate meanwhile decided on further restrictions for people without corona vaccination protection. The so-called 2-G rule is to be expanded significantly after a decision on Wednesday. In view of the significantly increased number of infections, from next Monday only those who have been vaccinated and recovered (2G) should have access to restaurants, cinemas, museums, thermal baths or amusement arcades, not even those who have been tested.

The corona situation is also worsening in the rest of Germany. Bavaria is calling for a disaster in view of the increasing occupancy of intensive care beds with Covid patients. This enables a coordinated and structured approach by all authorities, agencies and organizations involved in disaster control, the State Chancellery announced. In many hospitals, there is already no or very little capacity available, which increases the need for coordination when occupying intensive care beds and moving patients from overburdened clinics.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) recommends Covid-19 vaccinations for under 30-year-olds only with the Comirnaty vaccine from partners BioNTech and Pfizer.

Current data showed that heart muscle and pericardial inflammation in young people under 30 years of age were observed more frequently after vaccination with the Spikevax vaccine from Moderna than after vaccination with Comirnaty, explained Stiko, based at the Robert Koch Institute, on Wednesday for its updated recommendation.

For those over 30 years of age, however, there is no increased risk of heart muscle and pericardial inflammation after vaccination with Spikevax.

Pregnant women should be offered vaccination regardless of age.

More new infections than ever

Meanwhile, the health authorities in Germany reported more new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute than ever since the beginning of the pandemic.

They transmitted 39,676 new cases within one day, according to figures from the RKI this Wednesday morning.

The previous high was reported on Friday at 37,120 (previous week's value: 20,398).

According to the RKI, the seven-day incidence nationwide is 232.1.

It has thus reached a peak for the third day in a row.

Last Monday (201.1) and Tuesday (213.7) there were records for the daily incidences reported by the RKI.

A week ago the value was 146.6, a month ago it was 66.1.

According to the new information, 236 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were 194 deaths.

The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 96,963.

The RKI has counted 4,844,054 detected infections with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 4,415,900.
