Lazy eye in children: causes, symptoms and treatment
The German Association of Ophthalmologists said that lazy eye is a pathological condition that affects children and occurs because one of the eyes sends a distorted image that the brain neglects and depends only on the image sent from the healthy eye.
Causes of lazy eye
The association explained that the causes of lazy eye are:
squint
Congenital cataract (cataract)
Eyelid abnormalities (ptosis)
refractive errors
Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
Symptoms of lazy eye
Symptoms of lazy eye are:
Difficulty recognizing things
Constantly tilting the head to the side
Significantly falling off the eyelid of the affected eye
The eyes do not move in the same direction
Eyes not focusing on the same image
The association stressed the need to consult a doctor immediately upon noticing these symptoms to treat the lazy eye in a timely manner, warning that neglecting treatment leads to vision loss in this eye.
Lazy eye treatment
Lazy eye is treated by wearing glasses and corrective lenses for vision and wearing a blindfold over the healthy eye to encourage the lazy eye to function properly.
Surgery may also be required to treat ptosis or to remove cataracts.
